The Left faces its own Tea Party moment

The rise in power and influence of the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party has created a hunger among grassroots progressive voters for candidates who perfectly fit the democratic socialist mold, supporting policies like $15 minimum wage, free public college, and Medicare for all. Groups like Our Revolution are working to mobilize grassroots progressives in support of far-left Democratic candidates, and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have seen a surge in membership. DSA member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s primary victory over favored establishment incumbent Joseph Crowley, a potential future Speaker of the House, is an upset reminiscent of Tea Party victories over establishment GOP candidates.

But if that future involves ideological rigidity, obstructionist tactics in Congress, and strict litmus tests for candidates, then the Democrats should reject it. Nancy Pelosi has warned Democrats against getting too carried away with issues such as single-payer healthcare, a policy proposal that many Democratic senators like Kamala Harris and Corey Booker quickly adopted in order to boost their progressive credentials ahead of potential 2020 presidential runs. But as the Democrats march their platform leftward, they should exercise caution and learn from the Republicans’ ideological dysfunction, a remnant of the Tea Party revolution.

Talk Radio is forever findin' schisms in teh Democratic Party. Most of the schisms are found "only on Fox".

Not just on FOX.

The far left is going Communist or Socialist or something that is Anti Democratic...

Wake up and smell Stalin's ass!.

People love to say they don't belong to any party but they sure do like to attack/defend a party. Funny how that works.
Even funnier when one calls another a "partisan hack" and then promptly posts a loving tribute to their own party.
By funny I mean annoying as fuck that people are such hypocrites.

Have you noticed fewer and fewer folks recoil reflexively when you chatter 'but...but...socialism!' nowadays? It's not nearly the bugaboo it used to be.

People have seen "teh magic of teh Market" for decades now, and they're coming to the conclusion that "poor people must die to maintain profit margins" simply isn't good public policy.

More and more folks seem amenable to kicking the tires of Socialism.

p.s. I'll leave the 'ass smelling' to NotVetteman. He enjoys that sort of stuff.

Are we acknowledging now that the Tea Party was a failure?

Being an independent and ideologue gets you called "partisan hack" by zealots of both parties....that's extra fun.

People don't pay attention to history or even current affairs anymore.

People have seen "teh magic of teh Market" for decades now, and they're coming to the conclusion that "poor people must die to maintain profit margins" simply isn't good public policy.

Yet none of those people will get the fuck out of the capitalist hell hole known as the USA and run off to one of MANY socialist paradises that are so much nicer, wealthier and much more powerful than the USA.

Geee....I can't imagine why.

More and more folks seem amenable to kicking the tires of Socialism.

Mass ignorance doesn't suddenly make socialism a good idea.

Not to mention it's totally antithetical to most US ideals and the Constitution.

But there are morons abound who want the Soviet States of America anyhow so that we can all be equally poor.

How often do "poor people die to maintain profit margins?" I won't say it never happens, but I believe these deaths are usually the result of abusing drugs and other bad choices by the people who die or their parents.

I will disagree with your "usually" qualifier. Prior to Obamacare, insurance companies made very high margins by excluding "pre-existing conditions". Diabetes, cancer, heart disease.....those conditions affected people without regard to political party. Very few "bad choices" there, and I suspect the number of deaths attributed to those medical situations far outnumbered the Republican trope of "oh well they were just druggies".

The Right embraced their Tea Party movement, used it's rhetoric and momentum strategically and rode it to great electoral success, both in Congress and on State level.

But an equivalence is somehow supposedly bad for the Left?

Um, ok.

Yes.

Because going that far left puts them at odds with pretty much everything the USA stands for. The politics of the left are antithetical to the primary ideals of our country AND damn near everything in our Constitution other than the 'general welfare' clause.

Also the leadership isn't trying to put their own ass in a grinder (they are the evil rich people they are promising to take to task) by going that far left.

The Republican/tea party didn't have those issues because right wing.

As any RWCJer will tell you...
That...THAT.....THAT'S DIFFERENT!

Can you say "Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire"?

Now, we don't have disasters like that too often in the US anymore, but plenty continue to happen in developing nations where US corporations (including the Trump brand) have moved manufacturing to "maintain profit margins".

If it weren't for The Tea Party, we would be saying things like boot, and poofter and shagging. Let's not bastardize that image...kthx.

*chuckle*

No schisms in the party.
Even the Libertarians have schisms.
Someone here is so partisan that he'd vote for a yellow dog if it was on the ballot as a Democrat.
No schisms in his world...
