Oh I see where you got confused there. See, Rock and Roll is NOT real sex music nor can it put someone in the mood down to their soul quite the same between a man and a woman.

Allow me to introduce you to one of my special friends whom I've never met. Like an unspoken sin, this is what you need in times like this:

Some Marvine Gaye will will work just as good. See, sometimes us Rock and Rollers are selfish about this sort of stuff.;)

You need to read MyFall and Rise Chapter 11 and find out how I got the nickname "Honeybunch". ;)

See, my argument was that of the "Sex and drugs and rock and roll" thing, sex was the only one that really held up it's end.

I see that. But to me they are not quite the same thing. Sex will always be there with or w/out the music. Rock and roll will not fade away easily. Sorry, I wasn't trying to challenge you wrongfully. I get a little carried away in my thoughts sometimes.

I assumed rock and roll died the day fat Elvis dropped dead and stopped exploiting black American musicians.

You were more accurate than 45% of Grammarly users.
<I was worse than 55% of Grammarly users.
Wonder if it has something to do with writing in a different language than English….>

You used more unique words than 89% of Grammarly users.
<Could there be a relationship with my accuracy?…>

My typical Grammarly stats - when I have it turned on:

More accurate than 89% - usually typos and leaving out the multitude of commas Grammarly suggests.

More unique words - 97%

More productive than 95%

I was looking over some old AH threads with my SO and it's impossible not to notice how much the AH has changed over the years.

Since I mostly write Anthropologically, I gave up on grammar/spelling programs; they find too much wrong that's actually right.

What was once a flourishing community has disintegrated into a dozen or so of the same posters talking amongst themselves. I suppose there are only so many story writing and literary threads one can post before resorting to Playground style threads which don't really belong here.

5 years for an isolated blurt thread? Seems a dinosaur's age compared to threads on other boards.
Seems appropriate to drop this here:

While I thought I was learning how to live, I have been learning how to die. - Leonardo da Vinci

I know I prolly won't get a reply, better to gloss over questions that make one uncomfortable and bury one's head in the sand than be introspective and answer a sincere inquiry.

I haven't been here long enough to be able to give any meaningful input, but it would be nice to hear some thoughts from more experienced members.

No offense, but wth happened to this place?

Nothing. It has cycles of interest and boredom. It has been like that for over a decade. The real problem currently is that this is the longest gap in the year between themed contests.

At least now we answer newbies' requests politely, even though we have seen the same questions asked so many times.

In the past we treated newbies harshly.

As a relative newbie myself, I'm going to call that a change for the better.

I suspect that it has much to do with the lack of patience in the more recent 'newbie', probably more familiar with the speedy electronic response.
.
The harsh response would often have been the result of the question having been asked BEFORE an answer could be found with a little effort.

Where The Rivers Run North

by Willis Eschenbach

In the continental US, most of the rivers run east, west, or south. But in the Yukon and in Alaska, a number of them run north. The Yukon is a most curious river. The source of the Yukon in Lake Bennett in the Yukon Territory is only about forty miles (65 km) from the ocean … but instead of taking the direct route, it flows a total of almost 2000 miles (3200 km) before it finally gets to the ocean near Nome, Alaska.

Along the way, past Fairbanks in Alaska, the Yukon is joined by one of its many tributaries, the Tanana River. Like the Yukon, the Tanana also flows mostly north.

You can see the Tanana River noted in blue just to the left of Fairbanks.

And why is it significant that the Yukon and Tanana rivers run north? Well, it leads to a curious condition in the springtime. Over the winter, of course, the rivers tend to freeze up solid. In the spring, the south end of both rivers tend to thaw first … and that makes the breaking up of the ice a sudden event, with the mass of water surging downriver and clearing out the ice as it goes.

This is all of interest to climateers because the nights in the far north are so long. Why is the length of the nights relevant? Well, people get bored when it’s dark most of the time, and back in the day there was no TV up north … and as a result, more than a century ago people took to betting on the exact date and time that the rivers would experience “ice-out”, as it is called. Hey, you gotta do something to keep the megrims away …

No offense, but wth happened to this place?

I arrived three years ago and the place was feral - from what I gather, that was near the end of the Great Contest Wars, Writer's Cabins and Cabals. The place was poisonous, more toxic than a nuclear waste dump.

I don't know your historical frame of reference, but everything's relative. It's certainly friendlier now than it was in 2015, which is my starting point.

Sure, newbies get a bit of a hard time if they come stomping in with too much attitude (gotta be here at least a month before showing attitude, ffs ;)), but on the whole, it's civilised, self moderated (AHMod occasionally steps in, but generally the shit gets shut down early).

There's some older hands with a longer perspective who'll comment, I expect.

No offense, but wth happened to this place?

No offense taken. The short answer is time and times. I arrived in '05, Lit was still a fairly small site, not the monster it is today. It hadn't been "found" as the saying goes. The regulars were a small group of forward thinking, intelligent people who interacted well together. We even had Litogethers. I had the honor of attending two out of the 7 or 8 held. I had the honor of also meeting in person, a dozen or so of my fellow AH's.

Where did they all go? A couple died. Several couples broke up and either one or the other or both didn't feel comfortable here anymore. Some got outted one way or another. Several moved on to either owning publishing companies or on to mainstream publishing and didn't have time anymore. A lot were run off by the appearance of over the top trolls and political crap. The reason there is now a political forum.

New people appear. Some stay, some go away. Groups form, some good, some not so good. Some people get along with others, some don't. It is an ever evolving place. Some of us are still here. Some of the old are still around but don't evolve themselves in the day to day threads. Or that's is all they evolve themselves with.

Times keep changing.
