The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 02: A Comma (is a Restful Pause)

I'm writing today. And I took two walks and sat outside for a while.

I went out with my wife to a local historic garden. We had a pleasant lunch shortly after arriving, started to walk around the garden and it started to rain, light at first and then heavily.

We sat in a garden pavilion watching the rain patterns on the ornamental pond for half an hour, waiting for the rain to ease off, and then went home - where it hasn't rained for days.

There's a small patch of stony ground near my hedge [originally to prevent the then Dog from tearing up a freshly-patched garden]. I took a cutting from a Rose last autumn and, following instructions from a local gardener, simply stuck it in the ground.
To my surprise, I got two buds forming.
I've discovered a bit of a problem. A local Blackbird (who hides under that part of the hedge) has decided to ignore my little Rose and trample over it.
Short of a fence, I'm not quite sure what to do about it. . . . .

OK. Tea and a read of the Gardening Book, I suppose.

An airgun might be of assistance . . .

A water pistol would avoid trouble with the RSPB and RSPCA.

"The Gardening Book"? That's OK. When, like my wife, you have a library of gardening books you might find that they contradict each other. You read, compare, contrast, read again - and don't do any actual gardening except as plans never implemented.

Anyway, most plants she wants are not compatible with NE gales and salt spray. Seaside gardening is very limited. Valerian and Dandelions WILL grow. Most other plants won't.

Hope it's productive! I took a nice walk by the water and would like to write, but have to work. Nothing like a good walk and nature time to get the creative juices flowing though...

Thank you.

Sounds nice despite the heavy rain.

<spoken in a hoarse whisper>

It looks as if I have my 'old' [HP] PC back in action.
Of course, there's a whole rook of 'extras' to install, but at least the bloody thing boots up into a basic thing.
Time for a relaxing cup of tea. It's quite late.

When did 6PM come and go? About 40 minutes ago according to the clock. I got on a roll with my writing and knocked out way to many words. I'll find out tomorrow when I reread the whole mess, uh, thing.

I'm afraid my walks are limited to a round trip to the mailbox. About all my old legs will bear. Not that there is much reason to make that trip. Shopping is the ultimate trek but I do have the buggy to rest on as i slowly wander around.

Getting old is getting to be a pain in the, uh, legs.

Fresh coffee and a fresh kettle.

Sounds like some people had a lovely day. :rose: I'm glad.

I made it through my day and a friend bought me dinner, another listened and the third made me laugh. It's good to have friends.

Good friends make the world a tolerable place.

Fresh coffee for the late night and morning crew.

I have a few things to take care of and then to bed with my sorry ass.

Fresh Coffee

I do lurve fresh coffee, can't recall the last time I had instant.

Morning all, thought I'd pop in and see what this place is all about :)

As I get older, I find that I need fewer friends - which is probably just as well; they are 'falling off the edge' at an alarming rate. However, the diminishing few that survive are much appreciated. :)

This thread seems to be about: coffee, tea, writing, boats, gardening, weather, bears, munchkins, food, and anything else that comes to mind. :)

As all good coffee shops and meeting places should be.

CFMB_fan, Welcome to the Coffee shop. Pull up a chair or sit at the counter. We have a small but diverse group that comes and goes. Everything is good except politics. That causes way too many problems and we don't need that here.

Enjoy, HP should be along shortly for his morning cuppa. He's an interesting older Brit. We're mostly Americans but the stray member from Oz and other countries wanders in occasionally.

My name is on the thread most of the time. They swap out threads ever 5k posts or so to keep from slowing things down.

ETA: HP is also an avid photographer.

God I hate nightmares.

Not Nice, Madam. Not nice at all.
Be at Peace

Ah, the morning coffee went down a treat.
But the weather gods are causing that very gentle, but persistent, rain to fall.
And it's cool.
More coffee, I think

And?

Forget the bears for now. Thinking about steam engines puts me to sleep.
_____

Steam engines can be very simple: a heater (boiler or flash tubes) driving a motor (turbine or piston). For a bit more efficiency, add a condenser to re-use the water or working fluid, and a pump to move it to the heater.

Most of the planet's energy is generated by steam engines; all those nukes and gas- and coal-fired plants are efficient steam turbines. But turbines aren't efficient generating less than 1000 horsepower, so don't expect them in road vehicles. Probably.

The simplest steam piston engines aren't really efficient but they sure cook! The Stanley Rocket with 33 moving parts approached 200 mph in 1907 with an off-the-shelf compound steam engine and a canoe body. Later Doble steam cars could run 300,000 miles without service.

Steam cars are super quiet and low polluting, with energy profiles perfect for urban traffic -- no fuel wasted, idling at stops -- and as utility vehicles like forklifts inside warehouses. Electric carts takes time to charge. With a steamer, pour in kerosene and proceed.
_____

How does this put me to sleep? Mental calculations.

Multiple-expansion (compound) piston motors use two or more cylinders of certain volume ratios. I lie in darkness (except the retinal-damage flashes), mental gears spinning. Let's see, a 1.5x bore change gives a 2.25x volume change with the same stroke, and each stage should be between 2x-3x the previous, so if the bore of the initial high-pressure cylinder is 80mm and I break down each following stage into matched cylinders, the total is...

[/me starts snoring]

Mental masturbation? Sure. But it distracts me from health, financial, and political concerns that would otherwise keep me sleepless.

Coffee in the morning. Another glass of chardonnay now, thanks. G'nite.

Lynn, this place may be home but it does lack in sympathy. :D

Happy Friday morning, one and all. The end of another week or the start of another weelend. You're call.

Fresh coffee is ready and there are donuts around here somewhere. I know I picked them up on the way in.

HP, uh, HP, where did those donuts go? Like I really need to ask.

Dunno', mate. I've been working on a different computer (a poorly one). I wasn't around for doughnuts :(.
We used to have this TV programme called "Who wants to be a Millionaire", where a player got to answer a number of [sometimes tricky] questions.

One of the options in the event of a contestant's blank mind was "Phone a friend".
I see that microsoft has done the same thing with a problem; only they call it "ask a friend".

Gimme coffee please. This bloody computer refuses to cooperate.

I didn't expect sympathy. I just didn't realize Og wrote rape stories.

Thank you.

I write almost everything except Gay Male and Interracial. But my nightmares aren't like yours. Mine are more about missed opportunities and past decisions that were wrong. They lead into 'what if' scenarios and the nightmare can turn scary.

Rape? If that's what your nightmares are about then I'm sorry you have them. I have been accused of writing 'rape' stories but it is usually the male who is the victim and anon doesn't recognise implied consent.

Anon doesn't recognise any 'implied' anything. Sigh.
