Australia had a national vote published today on whether to allow gay marriage.

1. Eighty percent of the entire electoratate voted - yes 80% turnout and it was not compulsory.

2. 62% nationally voted to allow, and 38% voted against gay marriage.

3. Only 17 out of 150 electorates nationally voted no.

4. 9 out of the 10 most strongly opposed electorates to gay marriage have Labor Party (Socialist) MP's!

5. The leader of the No campaign a conservative, the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott lost his own electorate 25% No to 75% yes.

6. The vote cut completly through party lines the no vote came mostly from communities with lots of recent migrants where there was an alliance of conservative catholics, muslims and Chinese citizens.

7. Even most of the ferals (rednecks ) returned yes majorities.

What a complete waste of $122M!
I don't believe there was ever a real doubt about what the result would be.
Still finding it hard to understand why the government couldn't simply vote in parliment to allow ssm, and spend the $122M where it is urgently needed (like housing or hospitals.)
Of course, now Tunbullshit can claim the glory.....so there's that

Why shouldn't gays have the opportunity to be as miserable as straights?

It wasn't $122 mil it came in under budget by $35 mil !

And it should have been decided by the people......

Shorten and his cronies stopped it happening for a year.....not Turnbull

It's non-binding! Meaning the pollies can still vote it down, should they choose.
Turnbull will preen no end if it passes......when he could just as easily have called for a vote in parliment. Shorten had already said he'd allow a conscience vote before the plebiscite was announced.

Turnbull took the idea of the Plebiscite to an Election, the people voted his party in with the plebiscite as an election promise!

Shorten prevented it happening no more no less. You can't change the Facts WQ

Turnbull has every right to feel proud about the plebiscite !

It was a good result for the gays, yet still 4 out of 10 wanted no part of it!

True democracy at work!

This is a big win for human rights. We need to continue to chip away at oppressive Christian based values.

AMEN! And might I say you are preaching to the choir.

Is "plebiscite" the right word? Usually, that has to do with changes in national boundaries. I would have referred to a referendum or an initiative, depending on the instigator,

A referendum is compulsory ! A plebiscite is voluntary under the voting laws in Australia also a plebiscite can be conducted by post at a reduced cost to the taxpayer :)

I initially thought that the Plebiscite was unnecessary but it took on an importance of its own. If say only 45% of the electorate had voted like a US election the no voters would have argued for no change. But an 80% turn out on a voluntary basis is simply amazing. No politician is gunna have the balls to oppose that result.

As an effective exercise in participatory democracy it worked well and was dirt cheap. The Gays won but so did the voters.

The turnout for the UK's Brexit decision was 72.2% and that was considered massive. That was higher than the turnout for 2017 General election - just under 69%.

Australia turned out 80% of their electorate for the plebiscite.

Now if Aussies can only stop being such racist pricks, and having sexual assault be the norm, they'll be as civilized as the US!
