Americans, this seems too crazy to be true...

When my older brother got married, his bride was 16 years old. After almost 60 years and five children and numerous grandchildren, they are still happy together. However, she made the choice herself and was not forced into marriage by anybody. She also wasn't pregnant.

I've always had the idea that marriage by somebody under 16 required a court order, and I don't mean Sharia Court.

I'm pretty sure Virginia had the youngest age for marriage, 13 provided the girl was pregnant. The legislature ended that last spring.
Age of consent was still, 17 or there abouts, for sex and I think they made the age for marriage the same.

We had to get both parents to sign to get married. I was 17 and my husband 19. Within a few months we'd be a year older.
I was mistreated by my family and my mother was trying to get me to be a whore like her and my sister.
I got pregnant on purpose. It's the only way both parents would sign.
Sure, people said it wouldn't last. Oct was our 59th anniversary and we've rarely been apart more than a few days.
We have three grown kids, another adopted, plus grand kids. We kiss good nite every nite and every morning.

What really seems silly kids 18 can go off to war, be in porn films, work, and more, yet they have to be 21 to drink.
Most states have laws on what age you can marry. It's easy to drive to another state.

There's no accounting for nutty mothers forcing their young daughters into abusiveness marriages just so they can start popping out babies.

Seriously, though, I suspect it also has more than a little to do with socioeconomic circumstances. Doesn't make it right. I would like to know how the author of the article defines "minor", and of the 200,000 statistic cited of minor marriages over a period of 15 years, how many involved parties between the ages of 16 and 18, and how many involved existing pregnancy at the time of marriage.
