In a broad generalization, laws "May" solve them, but it wouldn't happen overnight, it would most likely take a couple generations till weapons are weeded out in America on the level they are at now, IMO, however, that in itself could be a pipe dream too.

He was a millionaire that made his money in real estate.

His father was on the FBI's most wanted list for bank robbery.

This is a major tragedy. Regular people just having a good time get slaughtered. A lot of families and futures have been irreparably changed.

I am grateful for the impressive response from Las Vegas authorities and first responders. Same goes for the medical people who all of a sudden get called in to try to treat and save hundreds of people. And let's not forget that some other regular people at the concert acted to help others. A lot of heroes there.

Yeah, this was the act of a deranged guy who was determined to murder a lot of innocent people on his way out. The fact is that there isn't much, policy wise or otherwise, that we can do to protect ourselves or the public from a homicidal madman. We live in an open society, and that being the case there's nothing to stop something like this from happening again. It's big country.

When something like this happens (or a fraction of this), the gun debate comes up and just goes the same way. Points are made about the proliferation of guns, illegal and not, in the US. The gun people make a few points of their own and then usually blow up in a bunch of macho talk and aggression.

Things will just continue as they are. We will have many tens of millions of handguns, about 500k a year will be stolen and used in crimes, and the owners claiming "self protection" won't be trained and won't protect anything. In my town we have a lot of homicides, and generally speaking almost all of them are by handgun (we might get a couple by knife), with about 80% connected to drugs and around 10% domestic. That won't change without legalizing and regulating drugs to disrupt the markets. That's general crime. I don't think we are smart enough in this country to make that change, so the general homicides will continue.

None of that has anything to do with mass crimes, which in the US have seen rifles of some sort used - Sandy Hook, Aurora, Las Vegas, and I think Orlando. To me I would absolutely ban drum magazines and assault rifles even semi-automatic. They don't get used for self-defense, or in general crimes. Maybe you hunters or self-protectors will think otherwise. But to me those tweaks are in the national interest and protect our open society.

Um you guys jumped on the gun rights bandwagon as if what I said had anything to do with gun rights. However if you want to go down that route, lest we forget that famous right wing legislating from the bench shtick you guys use all the time for liberal or left wing judges when you disagree with them yet manage to completely ignore the upending of centuries long interpretation of the 2nd amendment before Heller. Justice Scalia, legislating from the bench, fundamentally altered the interpretation of the 2nd amendment and now everyone takes it as enshrined constitutional reality that Scalia's interpretation is "originalist". A load of horse hockey.

Frankly what I am sick and tired of is the violence, the rationalization of violence, the acceptance of violence as an every day and even inevitable occurrence. Don't you get tired of it too? Don't you get tired of hearing of these types of events on a regular basis? Schools, movies, concerts, office buildings, parks, public events... a never ending cornucopia of targets. Let's sell more guns and cut back on any type of mental health services, and while we're at it let's make sure we make it as easy as possible to get a gun in America. Maybe that one good guy shooter will save us all. If that is they don't fire into a crowd and miss the target and hit an innocent person.

My statement is based in fact. If you want to disprove what I say, please find something that counters it. The google search I provided has at least four articles documenting the legal history of how the 2nd amendment was interpreted and applied until Heller. And further, how Heller fundamentally altered that interpretation and application.
