1) doesn't have to be match grade, most military weapons aren't.

2) it will only have a high failure risk if it's not NATO spec barrel and you're feeding a bunch of 5.56NATO into a .223 only weapon.

3) You could melt your barrel but that happens to military gear too and you'd have to be quick on the mag changes with a few thousand of them lined up. Usually you only have to worry about melting barrels or blowing out chambers with belt fed weapons running cyclic for extended periods of time.

As far as I know, this is the first and only mass shooting carried out with automatic weapons, if that initial report is true. They are already heavily regulated, and if he had 10 of them, if they were legal, that's well over $100,000 in weapons at a minimum. I highly doubt they were legal and registered. So we already have laws in place to protect against something like this, and those laws can always be broken by someone who wants to murder. Murder is already illegal. That doesn't mean it stops murder, clearly.

Automatic weapons are almost never used in crime. The last time I can remember something highly publicized was the LA armored car hijackers in the 90s.
