Actually he benefited from insane amounts of neutral and even positive media coverage until he got into office. Throughout the entire campaign, Trump received billions in free media coverage not afforded to the other candidates. It wasn't until he was in office for a bit that the media finally woke up and started calling him on his bullshit.

Don't kid yourself, in the biggest media market in the country NYC, they knew exactly who he was beforehand. The media outlets didn't care. Every time he opened his mouth there was a rush to see who could quote him first. The more outrageous he seemed the more airtime they gave him. Yes they did make money off it. Especially those idiot cable news networks. CNN's top guy admitted as much in interviews - as well as that they made a mistake by doing so.

During the primary season, most of his coverage was neutral or even positive. It wasn't until after the asshat was the defacto republican front runner that they started waking up to some of his bullshit. But it was still a slow start. Even for the first couple weeks after his inauguration the press was still giving him the benefit of the doubt. However as the weeks have worn on, the media is now doing the job it should have done during the primary - exposing him for the foolish, immature, narcissistic, hopelessly ignorant and egotistical man that he is.

A suite of new NBC News/Marist polls has found that majorities in three key states that helped tip the election for President Donald Trump now say they feel "embarrassed" by his conduct in office.
