The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 02: A Comma (is a Restful Pause)

With mid 90's in the afternoon, no coffee outside. Everything to do outside is done early in the morning or at night. That includes anything I do in the shop or at the new neighbors place. A couple more panels for a privacy fence to go and most everything is done.

Over the past weekend, I got an order for a ten foot duck hunting boat. A younger couple saw one of my eight footers last fall and decided they want one they can use on the river close to their grandparents place. An extra set of hands sure makes the building easier.

My day has been more or less flipped on its head but that's ok.

Entertaining is fun. :D

Fresh coffee and kettle coming up.

I'm finally getting around to trying to order my garage. What a mess! But the strangest thing turned up, a pneumatic stapling gun! Now this is intriguing. It calls up images of cold molded plywood boat construction. I wonder how long I can resist . . .

Hee hee. Should we start a pool? I'll say . . . two days.

When I put the frame together on my boats, I use two part epoxy as the gluing agent and use 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch ring nails to help hold the parts tightly together. I originally thought of the staples but since I screw the sides and bottom on, I figured the staples would be more likely to get in the way. I could probably get away with nailing the sides and bottom but I feel more confident with the screws.

What kind of garage are you looking for? Mine is a 20x20 steel frame on a slab and covered with 20 gauge steel sheets. I have two 8x10 0verhead roll up doors. My shop is the same but has one overhead door and one walk through door. Both structures have been through to hurricanes and held up well.

I got mine through Carolina carports. I think they are nationwide. Reasonable prices and good quick construction.

Helped clear an estate on the lake today. The only thing living there for the past five years have been spiders, mice, and mold. Nasty.

Oh much longer than that. Heck, it will take me until the end of the month just to get my tools put in order.

Should I decide to embark upon this madness, I'll be looking for a canopy I can put up beside the current garage. That way my stationary power tools will be at hand and the compressor will be plugged into the exterior power outlet. And I'll be able to work in the rain.

Where'd everybody go?
We had another two-hour-each-way drive down to a medical center for more checkups. Good news re: both oncology and ophthalmology. Cardiology is next week. If there's a pacemaker in my near future, I'll have time to write LIT tales again for a few months. If you don't hear from me, send donations to the California Native Plant Society in my name. Thanks.

I'm voting for more like two months.

Not nice. Gloves & Mask ?

Good Luck !

The Forest Service just closed some popular camping and picnic areas near here because of high bear activity.

I think the bears may be organizing a march on the plaza. It seems like everyone else is.

You mean that the local Bears are granted rights of assembly like the 1st Amendment?

Morning all... Uh, wait.... Morning was over a while ago.

Bears pretty much have their own rights to assemble in some areas, HP. But it is usually around a dumpster someone used to dispose of food in. ;)

Two extra sets of hands is even more helpful. That is unless they decide to strip each other so they are cooler. I'm glad there were no saws or other sharp things in use last night.

Three in a shower is always fun. :)

My life is becoming a plot bunny.

My usual anti-bear activity occurs Tuesday mornings, trash-pickup days. The truck usually scoops the poop between 9-10 am. I load the 30-gallon bin with garbage on the bottom, then yard cuttings, then non-refundable bottles-jars-cans, then about a cup of bleach poured over everything. I roll the bin out to the road at 8 am in case the truck is early.

Bleach seems to deter the bears. One neighbor neglected the precaution -- his trash was scattered this weekend. Silly sod.

Meanwhile, yesterday's medical news was pretty good. Further updates in a couple weeks, then we can roll again. Unless a pacemaker is indicated. That'll give me time to write more stories. Unless a bear gets me first. Should I carry bleach bombs when I go strolling?

Other subject: I've been lazy. Three 'ukuleles, a mandolin, and the mandola need restringing. The mandola is tricky; I have experimental non-standard strings for it requiring a micrometer, spreadsheet, and frequency-meter app to tune correctly. I need only dig out my tools and strings. Is that so hard? [/me lazy ass sez yes] Maybe more espresso will sufficiently energize me.

Bears usually assemble in sweaty back rooms, especially if there are cubs around.

Wait a minute... are we talking about the same kind of bears?

Our bears have more refined tastes; they prefer birdfeeders to dumpsters.
We scraped bear shit off the bottom of our front steps a couple days ago. Good thing we don't have birdfeeders. And I guess the herb-planters on the porch railing didn't tempt enough. What, bears don't like oregano, rosemary, thyme? Silly sods.

I should be sleepy but I'm not so I'm going to see if I can get a bit more writing done instead.

About yesterday . . . I didn't have a clue the place was so bad. No gloves or mask. They're in the van for next time though.

Regardless of whether they have a right, they are assembling and it's not advisable to get in their way.

I understand that they have a certain presence, as it were. And you don't argue with a 700lb beast ?

I sat down last night for a quiet time to watch a bit of TV.
Next think I know it's 4am.
Ah, that was not quite what I had in mind.
Drat !

Daily Word Count

My first time in here I think. Was wondering if someone could help me out with an answer. What is a good amount of words per day to write?

I'm trying to hunker down and finish my Women's Studies series, but I'm already about 140k words in, and I think I'm only half way finished. I've been trying to set some daily goals for myself so I can keep myself motivated, but what I want to write a day is 10k words and I feel that is really pushing it... or maybe I'm just a slow writer.

TLDR: Looking for a word count sweet spot that won't burn me out. Trying to see how much you guys do a day on average.

Number of words per day?

That depends on the person's personal situation.

If you are writing as a profession for money then as many as possible every day without fail. Even then that will vary according to HOW you write. If your words flow freely but in a disorganised manner and need substantial editing - a lot of words. If you polish and correct as you go and produce a near perfect product every day - many fewer words.

Most of us are writing as a hobby, a pastime, that has to fit around other activities such as work and family. Any words in a day is a success and writing may be impossible for some days or weeks.

A useful exercise for some of us in NaNoWriMo - the challenge to write 50,000 words in a month. To succeed at NaNoWriMo you need to write 1,666 words a day. A better daily target is 2,000 words because that will allow for unexpected interruptions. Some, like me, will have no difficulty in writing 2,000 words a day for a month. Some could find the challenge very difficult.

This is the National Novel Writing Month site:

The real answer to your query is:

As many words as you think satisfactory.

Edited for PS:

Under presssure I can write many words in a short time. In an examination many decades ago I was asked to write 500 words in French on one of a list of set topics. I had an hour and a quarter. I worked out what I wanted to say with an introduction, and exposition and a conclusion, wrote the whole thing as 2,500 words, edited and corrected them. The examiners only marked the first 500 words.

If I had been writing in English? I might have stopped at 500 words.

Don't like oregano? Sad. Rural bears just don't understand the finer things in life. We urbane types certainly do.
