Shark Week....

Anybody been watching these shows?

I've always been fascinated, yet terrified of these creatures.

Can't believe I swam in the ocean off the coast of Taiwan as a kid and never had fear....

I won't even go into the water now.

There's a dinner plate sized snapping turtle at the lake; I've seen him twice in thirty years. the lake is about 3.5x1 mile in size...but i'm still askeered of him.

And i saw a feral kitten again yesterday. They're good fun for visitors as a shooting gallery from the deck over beers.

Yes; i mentioned it last Fall.

I realized after my last post that the topic of cat fancying deserves a chat of its own, so i started a thread.

Sharks. Dont like em. Don't much like the o'seen generally, myself.

I once took a woman out in a sailboat. She was deeply afraid of water, as her father had died in the locherby plane crash. It was a bdsm thing, so of ourse i took her out; that's the way that stuff works.

She was really afraid. Me, i just dont much like the open ocean, prefer remaining within a few miles of shore, tops.

Well, not too many "bites" on the Shark thread but...

I had a close encounter when I was 15 yo and living down in Panama City, Florida.

I was water-skiing in St. Andrews Bay when I wiped out and lost a ski. I was down in the water and the boat had turned around and was idling up to the side of me.

I started to swim the 6 strokes or so out to fetch the ski that was floating on the water when some of the people on the boat started pointing and asking "what is that"?

I looked over...still in the water, and saw a large fin coming towards me...it was slow and lumbering.

At first I thought..."DOLPHIN" and almost swam towards it. But...I got an eerie feeling and instead swam two strong strokes to the side of the boat where my friends pulled me in.

The fin then turned slightly and the animal bumped the floating ski as it swam passed.

By this time, it was late and we were all getting cold. We called it a day.

Years later, enter the internet and I did some research when I became unusually interested in sharks.

I found that a man in his 40's was killed in St. Andrews Bay by a Bull Shark right at the same place I had been skiing.

At my place in Western Queensland I pay the aboriginal kids to bring me the carcass's of feral cats - $5 for a Tomcat - $10 for a female.

Because the natural wildlife evolved without cats. There are estimated to be 70 million feral cats in Australia which on average kill 4 to 5 times a day each. The small bird, mammal and reptile populations boom if the cats are eliminated. The kids used to bring in a cat every week or ten days when I first bought the property, now we might get one every 4 to 6 months. The other critturs are doing fine.

The property is about 200,000 acres of semi desert, it's much the smallest round this part of the state. - used to be a cattle run but it wasn't economic, so is now pretty much a wild life place.
