I think even if a cure for cancer is found, like the 1960's moonshot, any cure, incremental or full, would probably exceed the gross national debt. Pharmaceutical companies aren't known for making medicine easily within everyone's budget. Therefore, the only ones who would ever see any benefit from such an endeavor would be the politicians and mega rich.
However, I won't touch whether it's political posturing or not.
