You've just been handed a great deal of responsibility.

The well-being of people is in your hands. Pretty directly.

And you asked for it.

Many of you have been in this situation before, and perhaps it didn't turn out well. Not because you had bad intentions, or because weren't up to it. Somewhere along the way, there was something you should have taken into consideration that you didn't, or something you weren't aware of. There's always an "if only" or "I should have."

Or maybe you had the insight, and succeeded. If you were successful, what made the difference? If you weren't, what lessons did you learn that would've helped at the time?

They released me from jury duty yesterday. I did not have to weigh the evidence, etc. I had a celebratory sandwich at Snow City Cafe before returning to work.

The answer is crystal clear.

Do the right thing and don't fuck up.

 That makes you the second Anchorage-dweller I know who's been on jury duty of late.

No one asked me! Dammit! I wanna send someone to jail! Why haven't I received a summons!? (maybe cuz I wanna send people to jail?)

And a tale about escaping weighty responsibility is not helpful to those who can't get out of it.

I forgive you, though. You're special, even if you do dine at tourist traps. (j/k. I love a Snow City breakfast).

Ellie I know you are just making fun but actually being on a jury isn't fun. I have been on a jury 5 times including a grand jury. It seems kind of easy but at the end of the trial the judge tells you what the legal matters are pertinent to the case and you must decide on those factors alone. It doesn't matter who is the biggest evil jerk or who is the most sympathetic.

Nuance lurks all around.

ARRRRGH!

Just as you said in your preface, I know.

I've even been on a jury before. Just not here in Anchorage.

But that's neither here nor there. The responsibility I'm facing has little to do with crime and punishment, but it has immense consequences for those involved.

Nuance is about specificity. Care to specify any?

I handed out the best reply ever award too soon.

Something a little more specific would be appreciated, though...

says the vague one.

As one who has never served on a jury, I would be interested in your experience. Given the passions and biases, not to mention outright ignorance of law suffered by most people, did you find that your fellow jurors took that legal responsibility seriously and actually tried to apply the law as the judge instructed, or did you or other jurors struggle to keep one or more renegades under control?

LOL....the restaurant is next to the parking garage. It was a good sandwich.

I've send guys to jail before, perhaps that's why they didn't want me?

I know another guy who was seated on a jury, today.

Hehehe. Haven't had the sandwiches yet. The breakfasts though (yes, I know sandwiches can be b'fast) are always good, even if this doesn't happen every day:

Like sugar and spice

So you've sent people to jail and know peeps on juries... hrm! Verra interesting...

*sigh* Topic, please.

I mean, c'mon! The Colonel popping in, but not even a smidgen of your wisdom on the topic?

I crown you Lit's Biggest Tease.

*sigh*

I know it's not clear. I wish I could be more specific, and have been racking my poor, limited brain as to how to be more specific without indulging in the ultimate stupidity of being really specific, but, alas...

I'm probably asking for the impossible.

I'm glad you said "hi" though. It's good to see you! How've you been, Radiohead?

Actually, I don't have any wisdom on the topic. I wasn't being coy. I could not think of a time when I had that kind of responsibility and learned a major life lesson as a result. I guess I am fortunate to have been a beneficiary of circumstances rather than a victim.

I'd never intentionally hold out on our dear, Ellie. :)
