My desktop's power supply just died.

I've switched to my ancient desktop running Windows XP.

Can I get a new power supply before Christmas? It isn't just getting one, it's having the time in a hectic week to get to my local computer shop. Or do I go rummaging in the attic to find the desktop with Windows 3.1 and cannabalise that?

Or I could use a laptop - One is Windows XP; the other is Windows 10. I don't like using them because the keyboard isn't large enough.

Now I have dozens of updates to run on this ancient desktop - not for XP but for all the other software...

Title for an online ad:
10 reasons every woman should by sexy lingerie

Seriously? I can list all 10, without opening the ad:
1. Men like it.
2. Men like it.
...
10. Men like it.

C'mon, advertisers. Lingerie is impractical and I'm told it can be downright uncomfortable. It exists for a total of one reason. Get serious.

1] Take a look at inside the broken unti and let me know ALL the details off the label and the type of motherboard (20 or 24 pins on the main connector?). I may have a spare knocking about.

2] Have you considered a keyboard with a USB connector and use that ?
(assuming your laptop has a USB or two).

Thanks HP.

1. My local friendly computer shop will probably fix it today (with Chamber of Commerce membership discount).

2. I already plug in mouse and keyboard to my laptop. That makes it no longer suitable for use on a lap! But it is far better than my original 'luggable' IBM XT so-called portable with a built in 6 inch screen. That weighed about 18 kg!

Normal Service has resumed

A new power supply has been supplied and fitted within hours at a cost not much more than I would have paid for the part.

Oh jolly good:An admirable solution.

Strangely enough, my tower PC started making strange noises.
I don't normally switch it off (it takes too long to boot properly) and this ghastly row
was getting on my nerves.
OK.
Haul it out from under the desk-/work-top.
Guess what? A dead PSU fan.
The only reason that the whole machine still worked is, I suspect, the extra fan I fitted to the case. Fortunately, I have a couple of spares (the right fan is important of some of the stuff I've built).
And it works.
And I've ordered a new replacement PSU.

Note to self:

Don't wait until the day before Christmas Eve to get a hair cut.

According to how large the cleavage is.

Some views can be a vista.

and some require a microscope ?
Sorry.

My new PC PSU has arrived, as have the new fans.
This weekend will be kinda busy, I'm thinking (when I'm not enjoying a glass or two of some celebratory libation).

I had all the presents wrapped two days ago. Usually I'm up late on Christmas Eve struggling with recalcitrant ribbons, petulant paper and temperamental tape. I keep expecting to open a closet and have an avalanche of forgotten, unwrapped gifts come tumbling down on me.

Things fall out my my closets anyway.

Car Insurance renewal

Last year my wife asked me to query her car insurance renewal quotation.

I found that it was about 5% higher than the next cheapest comparable quotation so we decided to renew with the existing provider.

This year their renewal quotation had increased by £150 (or 50%) on last year's premium i.e it had gone from about £300 to over £450.

So I went checking for other quotes. She has now renewed with identical features for less than £150 total i.e. slightly less than the INCREASE and half the price of last year's cover.

What is going on? Do they expect customers to swallow a 50% increase?

The new insurers have a good track record of customer satisfaction. The only difference is that all their customers have to be over 50 years old. My wife has been driving for nearly 50 years! (I've been driving for over 50 years.)
