The Picasso is lovely too, although more abstract (obviously, duh...). I went to an exhibition in London recently of his portraiture and expected it all to be of that form. And some if it was, but it was really interesting that they had some early portraits he painted of his first wife, and they were extraordinary, like 'still life' paintings, incredibly naturalistic, quite moving.

Thanks Numi, don't you just love looking at Picassos early stuff? I think he was amazingly gifted and had a keen sense of where to put the paint, he was just wonderful!!

I found I really did like the cubist stuff, when I could look up close and from further away and then up close again, it was amazing. But his early stuff? Wow. You're right, he really could paint, in whatever way he chose...

The patina and the cubism are both interesting without detracting from the model. And by the way, I have fun playing with those things too.

I agree! My favorites of his are the portrait he did of his mother, the brush strokes are delicately done and it's so charming, I could look at it for hours and I love the old man with guitar because it's sad and very striking to look at.

What I love most is that he seemed to paint what he felt, his paintings almost breathe, it's fascinating!

They are definitely worth seeing in person, I reckon, I'll be seeking him out. I love that one of his mother. Truthful, but affectionate.

The other thing I found interesting (at the risk of boring everyone else with our 'Picasso chat'... ) was his interest in other people's styles. There was a fairly early portrait which the info said was painted during a period when Picasso was very interested in Goya, and in a 'blind tasting', as it were, you'd have sworn it was by Goya. Later, he's liking Matisse, a picture of a woman in a yellow chair, and it's practically a Matisse. And right at the end of his life, still painting in his 90s and a bit obsessed with Rembrandt, a self portrait, and you can practically see Rembrandt's hand in it. Fascinating.

Oh definitely, he was a great mimick to other artists. As an artist I think he liked to change it up and reinvent himself as he had so many different styles. I'll have to check those out that you mentioned as I don't recall seeing those, thank you!!

My arms weren't exact either and my eyes were open, but it's open to interpretation, right?

It doesn't really matter when the result is beautiful like this photo is Numi, you always have a good eye and this is no exception, it's beautiful!!

Critique the image all you want, but especially with that matte finish, it resembles an actual canvas, ready for framing and hanging in Louvre. Or at my place.

I've ended up not really liking this one.

Strangely you look more like a marble statue in this one than you did when doing the statues. Were you confusing Rodin with Renoir? Whatever. You still look great.

I can't say I've ever studied any type of art. I guess I got my mediums confused.
