If the USA government had deliberately devised a plan to force Fidel to the Soviets they could not have done a better job. Actually it's feasible that it was a deliberate policy to make the President look strong and increase spending on the military.
Initially Fidel just was a left wing opposition to Batista - who was a total twat.
If the USA had accepted his revolution and recognised the new state with an Ambassador etc, and not try ludicrous invasion/assassination attempts (and the continuing occupation of part of the island), it's entirely possible that Cuba would nowadays be just another Carribean island.
Like Jamaica, Trinidad, Dominica. A bit shitty, but not very concerning.
