What happens to the GOP after 2016?

It still looks like a "wave election" for the Dems. Even after Comeygate, Nate Silver is giving Clinton 75.4% odds to beat Trump -- and the Democrats 63.8% to take the Senate. (Systematic gerrymandering in the red states will keep the House Republican for now.)

It's far too soon to say the Republican Party is dying. Clearly a national party that still controls more than half of America's state legislatures and governorships is not going the way of the Whigs this election cycle or next -- provided it can hang together. But just as the party's national voting-share is slipping, the Republican coalition is fracturing. Pundits foresee a power struggle between at least three factions: the old-guard Establishment, the Bushes and so on; the economic-libertarian ideologues led by Paul Ryan; and the increasingly predominant Tea Party/Trumper/alt-right/paleocon wing. The religious right and the neocon warhawks will also have their hands in. Who will win? Or will one of these break off and go third party?

The Republican Party will just wave it all away after the election and, especially if they retain control of Congress, do more of the same that they've been doing for eight years. They do that regardless of whether it's Clinton or Trump in the White House.

The religious right . . . will also have their hands in.

Assuming they can hang together.

While Dickinson and Dobbs appear to be some of the Trump supporters most angry at Mormons, it’s become apparent that the Trump candidacy has divided conservatives along religious lines as much as it has along class and regional lines. That was true even before McMullin entered the picture.

While Trump has consistently earned high marks from white evangelicals, he has failed to reach support levels among Mormons, Jews and Catholics that were commonplace among past Republican nominees. Many of the most vocal leaders of the “NeverTrump” movement are also Mormon or Jewish, including radio host and doomsday prophet Glenn Beck or magazine publisher Bill Kristol.

Four of the five counties where Trump earned his lowest vote totals were in heavily Mormon areas. The former reality TV star has struggled among Catholic voters as well, with Clinton leading Trump among white Catholics by 46 to 42 percent in a poll released earlier this month by PRRI, a non-profit research organization specializing in studying religious attitudes. In the 2012 election, Mitt Romney earned a 59 percent share among white Catholics.

The intra-GOP religious feuding this year shouldn’t exactly be a surprise, argues PRRI’s Dan Cox.

“If you look at Trump’s rhetoric, that makes a lot of sense,” Cox said in an interview. “He’s hearkening back to making America great — again. When you look at the past, the religious group with the most power back in the day was white Protestants.”

The real estate billionaire’s appeals to returning to former greatness resonates strongly with white evangelicals, Cox said, pointing to a PRRI survey that showed that demographic group overwhelmingly agreeing with the idea that America has gotten worse since the 1950s.

By contrast, religious groups who were more culturally marginal or faced historic discrimination would not be interested in returning to former societal attitudes, Cox said. That’s particularly the case with Mormons, who were subjected to violence based on their religious views and political stances in the past.

“I think that history of being persecuted is really powerful among Mormons,” Cox said. “So when Trump singles out Muslims, I think that hearkens back, to Mormons, to their own experience.”

It's far too soon to say the Republican Party is dying.

It's not because they represent a part of America that is on it's death bed.

Freedom, capitalism, independence, self determination and individualism are all negative terms now.

American youth wants to be a socialist western European nation with tons of free shit.

Some surefire signs they want to be told what to do and given a 'living' wage for it too, cradle to grave nanny state.

Everything the USA ever was and meant to be, everything conservatives wanted to conserve, the grand experiment dies with the baby boomers.

They ruined it for everyone by raising a bunch of fuck head pinko' commie kids happy to turn it in for a block of government cheese....made from petroleum byproducts, courtesy of Monsanto.

The USA was meant to be an independent republic in North America. That is all. End of list. Everything else is negotiable. Thomas Paine -- just as much and just as good a FF as Washington or Hamilton -- was a proto-socialist, and his vision is just as American as Hamilton's or Jefferson's or Ayn Rand's, and generally better than theirs.

They'll split into The Tea Party and The Deplorable Party, and then Democrats will be the majority in Congress.

That's simply not true, there are certain values that this country was founded upon.

Like liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

Everything else is negotiable.

Obviously but that doesn't make it American.

Thomas Paine -- just as much and just as good a FF as Washington or Hamilton -- was a proto-socialist, and

That's a valid opinion.

his vision is just as American as Hamilton's or Jefferson's or Ayn Rand's, and generally better than theirs.

That doesn't make socialism American.

Socialism is the antithesis of freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It is the antithesis of individualism and self determination.

It degrades achievement, promotes mediocrity and generally speaking ends up shitting all over the rights of the individual.

And how is being forced into poverty by the government is better?

The religious right has finally shown themselves for what they are. Wussies.

The Republican Party is not only the party of whites, within the white race it is the party of older whites and lower income whites. These benefit from a well funded public sector of the economy paid for by high taxes on the rich.

Nevertheless, Republican politicians continue to advocate lower taxes and less government. Those policies only benefit the well to do,

The well to do are increasingly voting Democrat because of their distaste for the religious right and Donald Trump. They disdain people who raise their hands over their heads murmuring "Thank you Jesus." They do not trust the U.S. economy, and their position at the top of it, to a man who has gone bankrupt four times.

blah, blah, blah

A growing percentage of the American people prefer socialism to capitalism. During the presidential primary polls indicated that Bernie Sanders could beat Donald Trump by a larger margin than Hillary Clinton could.

If the average standard of living continues to decline while the rich get richer, the popularity of socialism is likely to increase.

They'll do what they always do--say "no" to anything that doesn't help

the special interests they represent.

The GOP are extremely slow learners. They'll do what they did when Obama won last time. Double down on obstruction. Issue a new consulting report that says, again, they have a problem with women, minorities, and LGBT.

I'm assuming the GOP leadership has inquired about extra security, because this time their base is ready for an all out war, on both parties. Trump will be back on Twitter, re-tweeting his alt right buddies calling Hillary a bitch and traitor who rigged the system. Alex Jones will be sobbing on tv, again, damning liberals to hell while asking his viewers to forgive him for cursing while hepleads for donations to continue his fight against the demons of hell. Sid Miller will again retweet a cunt joke about Hillary. Franklin Graham cannot fathom why his national election eve prayer failed, and will figure that it must mean that God really wants war against the godless progressives and their New World Order plan. I could go on, but there are too many damn alt right nuts and fools.

Like liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness and slave labor and killing Native Americans and stealing their land and misogyny and...

I fear it'll only get worse. They'll become more racist, more deplorable, and more of a threat to American society.

They are more than likely try to return to the days when women were nothing more than chattel. Doing that they would not have to worry about being PC, could beat their wives or girlfriends without fear of being arrested.

Hopefully they go left on social issues and right on capitalism and make us social liberals up here dependent on US trade very happy.

Capitalism is dead in the US.

The corpse is slowly but surely being destroyed and eaten up by the corporatist/socialist government control freaks.

A primary tenet of socialism is that labour controls the means of production.

You cannot reconcile that with your bizarre (American) misinformed positions.

You've been bombarded with capitalist propaganda for so long you just automatically accept it. No matter how absurd.
