Canada was ranked No. 19, even though the United Nations Development Program ranks our country ninth in the Human Development Index. A report called “Every Last Girl,” released for International Day of the Girl cites a low number of women in parliament and a relatively high adolescent fertility rate as reasons for the discrepancy.

The report is aiming to list the “root causes of girls’ exclusion and disempowerment” in order to allow them to reach their full potential.

Sweden has the best record, followed by its neighbours Finland and Norway.

With one of the biggest economies, one could expect the United States to be high on the list, but it was ranked only 32nd, beat out by countries like Kazakhstan and Algeria. The report cites a high maternal mortality rate when compared to other developed countries; it says 14 of every 100,000 women die in childbirth.

The reason the US is rated so low is the way we treat our girls/women. Sports wise in our junior high, high schools and colleges we fund men's sports fully but women's sports take a back seat. In the workplace we pay women less than men even when the women are doing the same job. In health care, we fund more research for male cancers than we do women's.

Women's sports are less popular than men's sports.

Women are, men do.

When women's basketball is on the television in a bar I patronize the only thing I notice or care about is whether or not the women's basketball players are pretty.

The sports I really like are boxing, mixed martial arts, and weight lifting. Women participating on those sports disgust me.

Sweden has a high rape rate due to the large number of Muslim immigrants. Muslim men believe that they have the right to rape women who are not Muslim. Of course, they rape Muslim women too, even their sisters.

Not entirely sure you can penalise a country for having fewer women in parliament.
Typical my more men want to be in politics than women.
I also don't think the UK should suffer for that given the prime minister is a woman and that the number of female MPs is actually not bad.

"What's the best job a woman could hope for in the UK? Why, only leader of the country. Outrageously unfair!"

I love how Italy is so high as well, given that they're a nation of womanisers.

Women make up 50% and slightly more of the world's population. Every occupation from head of state to ditch digger should have equal men and women.

In Canada, US, and UK teen girls getting pregnant is usually noted as a reason for females being held back. Not really and discrimination. Although all charts show women get paid less for same work probably half the time.

The majority of students in university in Canada are female. Bit of a waste of education if many just desire to be home makers. Females are just not approached by political parties to run for office.

Old stereotypes still abound. Females may not have the upper body strength of males but any job that requires that much brute force would be extremely unergonomic and unhealthy. Workplace safety and health regs would mandate that the job be changed to protect the male.

As females are generally lighter and excel over men in dexterity, endurance, ability to network and ability to handle stress, why are females not making up the majority of astronauts, fighter pilots and CEO's. They should certainly be the high ranking officers in military trades not requiring hefting 200 lbs of gear across the boonies.

LMFAO!!

What a bunch of psychotic double standard bullshit.

The standards are bullshit. The presence of a few women in parliament doesn't mean empowerment to the entire women kind.

How about you take equal pay? Hmm? That's something that affects all women. Bet this country will slide much lower than 32nd when it comes to that.

When the country smartens up and throws that rape supporting piece of filth Lance out, I heard it will get down towards tenth place.

There are just some jobs that most women will never want to do.
Likewise there are plenty that most men will never want to do.
Forcing a 50/50 split is just moronic.

How? If they can hold office, own property, conduct bidnizz and are entitled to the same rights privileges and protections as men then what the fuck?

How about you take equal pay? Hmm?

Women don't get equal pay?

Where did you come up with that load of shit?

It's 2016 not 1960. It's illegal and isn't real.

If it were I'd only hire women. Zero male employment.

That's sexist!!

You're a fucking idiot.

Typical racist bullshit. Explain then why South Africa's rate is higher when they have about the same number of Muslims in both countries.

Because you can get away with literally anything in South Africa if you have enough money and it doesn't end up on the news before you can bribe your way out of it.

When Houston had a Women's professional basketball team, they won the championship four years running while the men's team, the Rockets kept blowing it.

I talked to a ref who worked women's high school and college basketball games. He said the women were both more aggressive and rougher than their male counter parts.

In a women's professional soccer game I saw one team member grab the ponytail of the other team and yank her down. You don't see that in men's professional soccer.
