In theory, you're right.
And that's exactly what happened when I tried to get rid of Emerson in the initial stage of his trolling : I engaged in counterattacks, shaming attempts, attempts to explain my distress over those. -- and as you said, those made it worse.
- On the other hand, I noticed that, when most people realized what he was actually doing (given that after the "big reveal" of my gender via skype, he was still trolling me under the excuse that I'm a "female impersonator") they decided to stay neutral and no longer intervened by making fun of me or defending him.
- Which was really cool on their part and also changed my outlook enormously ( in that Emerson's idiotic posts no longer affect me emotionally. )
So I concluded that the attitude of the other posters matters a lot in such cases.
Anyway.
My take on RobDownSouth is that he cares a lot about the Blurt posters' opinion.
So one of the reasons that he kept on with this alt. was because his friends didn't think he was between the attack alt, nor were they aware of how vile his attacks were.
(ps - Darbhinder's posts often disgust me but they don't affect me much otherwise.)

The first paragraph was just an example in order to explain my reasoning behind this, btw.
