This is how it will play out.

God sent this disaster to wipe out the the unclean from our neighborhoods. Obviously since I survived I am now the chosen one. Our neighborhoods must be rebuilt to show our faith in God. Send the checks to me. If you don't have the cash to prove your faith we accept Visa and Mastercard.

There was an earthquake in one of the muslim countries many years ago.
To my shocked comments re the no. of casualties, an acquaintance of mine (she was dutch) replied : "Of course God sent an earthquake there. Because they aren't Christians!" She was a member of those mainstream churches.

Interesting to see how people interpret the symbolic /metaphorical aspects of the Bible in ways that suit them : some focus on helping their neighbour, others on killing their neighbour.

Having said that, I am intrigued as to what you think Einstein's beliefs were, and in your evidence that atheists think the Universe is chaotic. These words are to be used with precision. I think that atheists as a term is too broadly used which leads to many confusions, imo.
There are two types of "atheists", as I see it:


1.Those who don't believe in a personal God or the literal "Jesus loves you" stuff, and who are critical of some of the man-made interpretations of the Bible. Especially of the manner in which those teachings have been misused.
By the same token, those people are able to see the Bible for what it is or was supposed to be: a moral and spiritual guide for how to live one's life better. And are able to separate the philosophical and metaphorical parts from the bad / outdated ones.

Whether they believe that the Universe is random (atheists) or not (agnostics) - it's up to them.

2.And the Sam Harris- type ones.
The intolerant and/or uneducated ones, who believe that only their ideology is the Bible, and who totally disparage every religion or ideology that differs from their own.



And now as a comeback to Christobal's sarcastic comment: the GB is full of the latter. Just have a look at some of of RoryN or BoyNextDoor's threads, for example.

The truth is: none of us know what's really out there. And a bit of humility and willingness to tolerate other people's perspectives wouldn't hurt.

Good point. And I'm a bit like that too, as I was told a few times IRL. So I'm just as intolerant in other aspects, as some GB atheists are when it comes to the Bible.
Now strict on the topic of Spirituality /Religion:


1.I'm not religious. At all. I'm actually in the stage of being enchanted by another school of thought. (that too shall pass, eventually.)
-- But I see the Bible as being part of our cultural heritage (I'm referring to the more 'Western' countries), so I prefer an attitude of respect at least from that pov.
- I'm referring to the moral /spiritual teachings contained in the Bible. And on top of that, on many occasions Christianity was the glue that united people and gave them a sense of identity and kinship.

In saying that, of course I condemn some of the other aspects : the Witch trials, the religious wars within Christianity, the enslavement of other nations in the name of religion, the current hate speech professed by people like Pat Robertson and so on.
And there are still aspects of the Bible teachings that haven't been updated yet to the values of the 21st century, as other parts were.
--- But if it weren't the Bible, haters would have chosen some other text to justify their hate. And on a larger scale governments would have used something else in order to manipulate masses or to justify atrocities. They did it before, with politheist ideologies; and they're doing it right now, with both religion and atheism.

Those who made it were mainly believers. (those who believed in God, or existentialism, or in anything that transcends our mundane existence.) A lot of those who didn't succombed to despair and gave up.

Values conservatives will always exist. Its time liberals deal with it. There will always be at least 10-20% (probably more) of people who will be social conservatives. Just as there were social liberals in the Victorian era and other conservative eras.

Even looking at myself: those times in my life when I felt 'depressed' (not in a clinical sense; more like demoralised)
I either took it upon me and my self-esteem was shattered, or I felt at the mercy of circumstances, helpless and out of control.

(Constructive) anger gives one a sense of power and control, in that one feels that an injustice has been committed against them (either by someone else, or even by themselves). That notion either props their self-esteem, or makes them feel less helpless and more in control of their circumstamces, because it gives them something to work on.
