I've always thought the extra U to be quite elegant.
It is not an 'extra' U, it is a required U. Proper English does not contain extraneous Us, American English is lacking.

I asked Laurel to change my username (related to an offsite matter, nothing to do with my experience on Lit.)
She graciously agreed, and someone suggested hashtag. Which seemed the best choice since many people call me hashtag, hash or so on.
