UK now has one of the worst healthcare systems in the developed world, according to

All British politicians recognise that the NHS is flawed. They disagree about how to make it better.

...

And that is why it was created.

It can never be fixed because market efficiencies do not matter, competition does not matter, the only thing that does matter is the sophist power of campaign rhetoric.

Some people still think they can get a free lunch.

And breakfast. And dinner.

Maybe. But the British NHS isn't 'free', and never was.

It is 'free at the point of delivery' because it is paid for by National Insurance contributions and general tax revenues.

The cost to an individual is much less than a US Health Insurance package but has (except dentistry) no co-pay charges for the user.

UK voters are well aware that the NHS costs substantial amounts of the Nation's wealth. But all three main political parties are committed to retaining the NHS. It would be political suicide for any party to suggest abolishing it.

The only people who get free NHS treatment are foreigners getting emergency care who skip the country before paying their bill. If they are members of a similar scheme in another European country the charges are balanced against Brits getting treatment abroad. If they have medical insurance? That might pay. But for hundreds of thousands of foreigners a year, the bills aren't paid, except by the UK taxpayer.

And that includes the payments from all the UK citizens like me who have health insurance as well.

We can use the National Health Service for those things it is good for like trauma care, get seen by consultant specialists as a private patient faster, use private hospitals for minor or 'cold' surgery such as hip replacements, use private dentists etc. Or the health insurance can just provide money when when are admitted to hospital.

But even with all the extras private health insurance brings, the total health costs for the whole of the UK is significantly less than paid by the US.

The best health care in the US is the best in the world. But that is of no comfort to a US citizen who can't afford it, or whose insurance company won't pay for it.

No matter how poor you are in the UK, the NHS will provide health care. It might not be the best, or the fastest, but it is there for you.

Other European countries also have universal health care on different models of financing it, but very few would deny health care to anyone.

So, in summery... if mediocrity is acceptable to you then "universal" health care is the answer.

The only ones who think it's free are the ones who bash it. The one who live within it understand that it is not. The same system used in Canada I lived there 40 years. No political party in Canada would dare try either. In fact in Canada each province is responsible for it's citizens.

What does the NHS have to do with muslims?
I mean, given that it's a BB thread..;)

Universal provision and 'the best' are not necessarily compatible for any service or product.

BUT the UK would rather have a health system that treats EVERYONE instead of one that refuses treatment to those who cannot pay.

The choice is between providing healthcare, or denying it unless you can afford it.

In the UK you can buy better healthcare if you can afford it. You can even go to the US for healthcare - if you can afford it.

There are a significant number of Muslim doctors, and nurses, working in the NHS.

They will even treat people who have views like BB's.

You cannot be turned down by law in the US.

That means "everyone" gets treated.

The main problem with the NHS isn't the system itself it's the fact that one third of doctors are fucking useless and don't give a shit about their patients.

Nobody at the VA or military hospitals gives a fuck either.

That's government HC.

But if you can afford it, buying private health insurance means you can use the NHS in an emergency and go private when the system is slower or less efficient.

Impossible!! NHS= STALIN NINJA SQUADS KILLING GRANDMA!!!

If you couldn't pull stacks of cash out for a good doctor is it not?

If you're poor which would you prefer? Take a number or fuck you die in the streets?

Or are you just willing to own up to 'fuck the poor they deserve to die in the streets'?

There isn't much in between.

Nhs

Is not free, we pay our taxes to support it.
Unfortunately it is a gift for private enterprise (read Virgin)
So Richard Branson and his mates talk to the government.
They try to chop up the NHS so the good bits go to Branson.
They also have lots of mates who do drugs.
So a drug manufacturer gets his nose in the trough as well.

This is not just the NHS, any mate of Cameron gets a free run at anything public service.

NHS created a need which now cannot be satisfied.
Hunt is trying to deliberately wreck it and let the good bits go/private/public partnership.
And amazingly Hunt will probably retire to a directorship..... in a healthcare company..

Like Obamacare it could work if vested interests did not try and sabotage at every turn

So THAT'S the problem with Obamcare...vested interests try to sabotage it at every turn!

Please tell us who these people are so we can have them arrested.

Have No Fear.. TTIP And Glyphosate Will Deal With It!

Carconogens Will Be Sprayed Everywhere, And TTIP Will Prevent Legal Action.

How so?

So what? It's still a fucking disaster.

In my minds eye the only thing that counts is time we have being alive. As a group the United States we can do better for ALL its citizens. No matter how they meet their maker.

So a mesure of sucsses or failure is relative.

Yere absulootelee rite.

Do they get continuing care for a life-long condition? At no cost to them?

Or do they only get care in an emergency?

Don't let the boneheads fool you. Most Americans are on some form of government provided health care (VA, Medicare, Medicaid, Federal/state/county/city health programs, CHIPS, ect.). The only people bitching about government involvement in the payment of their health care are the corporate boot-lickers that milk their employers, without realizing that they are one pink-slip away from going into the very system they profess to despise.

What's really funny, is when the old folks on Lit who are on Medicare and Socialist Security start bitching about government programs.

Almost as funny as the boneheads that whine about government hand-outs to poor folks, while taking the home mortgage deduction on their taxes.

Some things in life are real head-scratchers.
