To Kill a Mockingbird was one of the rare required novels from school that had a lifelong impact on me. Today is a sad day.

Aah she's just been on the news. :(

I still haven't read Watchman.

I am choosing not to read it because I am told that it isn't great and TKAM is my favorite book. I don't want to chance it.

Harper Lee is my literary hero.

I say go ahead and read it. I loved it, it is different but its a very interesting look back into the mindset of the times. To me these older stories are like a poor man's time travel. She makes me feel like I'm walking down the street next to her, love her writing.

It's one of my faves for sure and I'm kinda reluctant to read it for the same reason.

I've been avoiding the sequel, especially after reading reviews. I'm torn as to whether or not I'll pick up a copy now or not.

I'll read Watchman eventually. I don't think anything could spoil TKAM for me.

Such an interesting story of a life. More than a little Boo Radley there.

"Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."

Truman Capote was an extraordinary writer who lived across the street from Harper Lee, they were best friends, and she was his research assistant out in Kansas when he wrote IN COLD BLOOD. She was a nobody from Collard Greens, Alabama who created a colossus and best seller first time she picked up a pencil and licked its lead. Happens all the time.

I mean, what are the odds for two kids from nowhere cranking out two of the most important books of the 60s! Then one of them did zip for the rest of her life.

I'm not surprised you believe Barking Bitch Hillary is the Second Cumming.

I've heard such mixed reviews. For that reason, I won't be reading it either.

There was a fabulous article about her online this morning. Semi-biographical. I'll try to remember where I saw it and link it here.

The literary community thinks just the opposite. That she was his inspiration for Cold Blood and other works. Its suspected that they parted company because she felt she deserved credit for the that first novel. Her stories stand on their own and she was known to be reclusive.

I agree completely, a favorite and where my user name comes from. I have not read the new one yet. I too am hesitant because of the reviews. :(
