And like any ideology , religion's initial intended purpose (to aid one in self-discovery) ended up being distorted or misused.

Back home they used to host lectures on "Philosophy of religion" (among others - History of arts, and so on) at the Atheneum. They were open to the general public.
On the other hand, you Do encounter similar literal interpretations, like "Jesus loves you" etal.

We have an increasingly educated population and ghost stories have less and less of a hold and reality has more prominence.

So, as a result, where there is less education, like in muslim countries where they stone women for reading a book and think 77 virgins await them in the afterlife and in parts of 'Merica where homeschooling is a virtue, every sperm is a potential child and wedding cakes for same sex unions are blasphemy, ghost stories take on an amazing and surreal role in reality.

The good news is that science and reality are breaking the hold of ghost stories and fear.

I don't know what religious wackoes must be in the States. I don't live there.

But in other parts of the world -with the exception of very uneducated social environments, of course- religion is practiced in the right way. They emphasize the spiritual and the need to lead a meaningful and moral life. Less of the literal stuff.
