What Exactly Is A Great Education?

poor Luke:(

"I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more"

Poor fratboy: needs to keep bringing a family member up on this adult Board just to fluff more his own starving ego, a family member who shouldn't be mentioned here in any regard whatsoever.

Twitter and Facebook not clothesline gossip social media enough, you gotta be the Caitlyn Jenner of the great GB.

Actually dick, the Jesus you post for said he loves liars so much he gave his own life for them.

You and frat boy got your edumacations at the same reform school, eh?

When you continue to lie and don't repent or amend your sinful ways, you make a mockery of black Jesus.

On one hand I was thinking: "Here we go again, RichardDaily is intentionally doing his thing so we'll go through the Grandhound day scenario again.
But then, eyer's 'edumacation' comment was so funny!

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.''

My great grandfather and his brother were schooled at home. One graduated Harvard, and the other got a PhD from Vanderbilt. One was a perfesser of modern languages, the other was a perfesser of classical languages.

What exactly is a great education?

Obama says Hillary and Bernie both guarantee kids will get great educations.

A great education is defined as one where the kids are "correctly" indoctrinated whilst leaving their sel-esteem unbruised, It is a given that whatever new scheme is devised it is designed to first enrich top-heavy administraton, the NEA and ultimately their members, the vast majority of whom vote Democrat.

I'm insisting that you're a liar... because you are.

And you're not...

...right dick?

Isn't it telling why all you wannabes need to measure your widdle weenies only against those you fantasize inferior?

What's up wit dat, dick?

And you're not...

No, I'm not.

We were talking about you, and the lies that you tell.

Jesus cries every time you post since you said you were going to leave.

You can't seem to help yourself, which is the sin of lust, you cannot control it, and it makes jesus lose his erection.

An education is general, not specific. It teaches an ability to be as fully human as possible. It ought to include scientific literacy so that we can understand how double blind testing works and see through absurd newspaper headlines about 'cures' and 'scares'; philosophy, at the very minimum basic logic, so that we can spot when our politicians and media are lying to us; literacy, numeracy and a foreign language, to enable us to understand mortgages, insurance risks, small print, and to cope abroad; and geography and history, so that we can apply the lessons of our world's past to its present and use them to work for a better future, however that is defined.

It should teach us to appreciate art, and to know bullshit when we see it; to know the difference between literature and trash, and know that in life one needs a judicious mixture of both. It should teach us decency, wit, kindness; it should help make us broad, humane, urbane, understanding and generous. In short, it ought to be the very best that has been thought and said, and the precious life-blood of a master-spirit, to quote Arnold and Milton respectively.

What it absolutely ought NOT to be is some sort of corporate training programme for future drones, destined to compete with the Chinese hordes on volume and price. We societies of the West cannot compete on costs or sheer numbers. Our strength has always been, and must continue to be, in our ability to question and to connect, to discriminate and judge. Such vital skills will not be taught in a system obsessed with tick-box examinations and lowest-common-denominator expectations.

There is no value in our current educational model for the things you speak about here. In the US, "education" is an industry, not much different from the prison industry. Over the past 20 or so years, the goal has shifted from attempting to create independent and analytical thinkers, to getting as many people in the door to pay as much tuition as possible. That has left us with a glut of people who have a piece of paper that indicates that they're educated, but who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag.

Would you mind stopping following me around like a pathetic puppy dog?

Thanks.

I'm not following you around. YOU sidetracked the thread. Everyone was starting to get along fine, regardless of "political party", and then you came. With your clear goal of winding up 1 or 2 posters.

You threw an offense at JBJ (saying that he's uneducated). Because you knew that either JBJ or eyer would be pissed off by your insult and intervene. So it snowballed from there, with the occ. Light match from you and then : the other posters started getting at eyer.

Your next moves will probably be to stir some other things around, and try to push people's buttons until they snap and say certain things until they get at each others' throats.
Then you'll start vanity threads again and… so on.

And Laurel pleaded with everyone to stop all those fights that lead to the underage bullshit'n stuff… .

According to an old book I have in my personal library, reading the editors' recommended list of 1,000 classic texts will give you a balanced and worthwhile education.

They were wrong.

ok

I laughed.

The Marine Corps was a great education.

Laying rebar in sub-zero temps in Topeka was a great education too!

 I went back to college after that. SUddenly construction wasn't so fun...

It is increasingly the same way here. Students are now consumers, and pupils must get their grades or there is hell to pay - not by them, of course, but by their teachers. Only in the independent sector, which is free from government interference and curricular changes, can real 'whole-child' education continue, connected, however tenuously, to the thread begun in Plato's Academy almost 2.500 years ago. Which means that those already outrageously favoured by fortune from birth have those privileges further entrenched with every day at school.

Independent schools also have the luxury of not having huge class sizes.

There is no point trying to get a great education when basic education has been failing so spectacularly.
Almost every day, I encounter school-leavers who cannot do simple math functions like addition and subtraction, and who would fail a basic literacy exam.
It's very disheartening.

And you're not...

...right dick?

Isn't it telling why all you wannabes need to measure your widdle weenies only against those you fantasize inferior?

What's up wit dat, dick?

CONT.
Just to be more specific: You insulted JBJ, then eyer intervened to insult you as a payback. So oggbashan got upset with eyer and insulted him. (Quite understandable from ogg's pov, since many GBers are kinda fed up with the fights between eyer and you guys).
Then eyer, in return, went and insulted Ogg in another thread (called him a wanker queen).

For people who weren't aware of this thread and couldn't see the causality, it looked like "eyer is going crazy again'.

Deja vu. And a poster claimed yesterday that eyer's sole purpose here is to troll, whereas everyone else is innocent.
Riiight… .
