Yeah, its 29F here now and very sunny as I'm preparing to head out to the park for a long walk. Given the parks part of a wetlands area and adjacent to the river its chilly. But the plus side is the cold limits perspiration and overheating and its easier to breath properly while under exertion.
I had a doctors appointment yesterday and they were amazed by the difference a 6 to 8 mile per day walk does. A couple of the serious runners didn't believe me until they'd quizzed me a bit. I suspect some of them were annoyed to find out how effective walking is when compared to fitness jogging or running.
Running is an orthopedic nightmare, if you wish fitness as a goal a brisk, variable grade walk is just as good and much better on the wheels.
Good for you!!
Thanks, once I read up on Interval walking and how varying things up a bit improves the process I was sold on it. I've gotten some odd looks while walking up steep hills or walking backwards for a few legs of a walk but I'm stronger for doing it. I knew health care professionals can get a bit rigid in how they understand the entire fitness thing but what should have been a brief office visit turned into a "how to do fitness walking" discussion. I did get one good recommendation I hadn't considered, I'll buy some compression socks to try out while walking.
I've had issues with the walking thing once I screwed up the shoulders. Funny both new Achilles tendons are actually pretty good and much better then my originals. But moving the torn shoulder bites hard. They won't allow me anything over my head so swimming is out. The best work out I can get is running in water above my collar bones. Which was awesome.... I could handle an hour of that easy until I fell and torn up the left shoulder.
The cold weather has me petty freaked out right now cause the pain level is bad even with my meds & both shoulders taped. So I will have to work in an ortho visit & MRI this month. I just can't tell if it's the rotator cuff or another tendon that's messed up. I just cant' move it even driving underhanded with out paying for it enough to lay in bed & not move it for a couple hours.
