Background needed on Romani culture

Hey there,

I would like to get to know a bit more about the Romani culture and their views, habits and even their view on sex. I'm doing a bit of research on the subject for a story but I found lots of sources lacking emotional content and staying very far from real situations and real people.
I have lived in Romania for a while and got to experience some of the culture but sadly also how they were treated most of the time.
If you have any personal experiences you like to share with me I would be very grateful. You can either reply on this thread or by sending me an pm.

Edited post to appear more political correct.

end-of-line.

For starters, even if you're writing amateur erotica fiction, it's better to refer to the people and their culture as Romani instead of "gypsy."

Some may think it's being too "P.C." as most Westerners grew up with the word/term as seemingly innocuous fashion and still use it as such, but as an adult I prefer learning about others different from myself and evolving to respect them rather than being stubborn in my non-Romani privilege remaining ignorant about casual ethnic slurs.

You toucha my seester, you die.

Unlessa you bring money. Then we talk.

They are very secretive cultures. Anyone who knows any gypsies well, would probably be someone who is a researcher or know someone who has left it and could be in hiding from their families.

You might watch the movie "The man who cried." I am told it is generally somewhat accurate for the time period in the film.

Did the term "gyp" (to cheat someone) come from Gypsies, or were Gypsies named after the term?

Gypsie comes from the word "Egyptian." The Romani have a legend that they migrated out of Egypt and now roam Europe.

The term "gyp" is derivec from Gypsie.

Thanks for the movie reference I didn't know that one. I'll be looking it up. And for the links I was already familiar with them but I appreciate them anyways.

Is Google broke?

He has already looked it seems, esp. films, he missed the film I referenced.

I wonder if he read all about the Disneyworld scam, there was sex, violence and betrayal in that. Also money gained, then lost.

So much depends on when and where you set your story. Also, just like with any other ethnic groups, the characters' socioeconomic status will change things.

For example:

British Romanys have little in common with Romanian Romanys.

Yes, and despite their history (perceived or accurate), it is now generally considered derogatory in the same sense jewed or other variations is.

if i googled correctly that was the work of irish travelers which are very much like romani in a lot of ways, but aren't actual "gypsys" at all.

It depends whose definition you use, there has also been some intermarriage between the groups. Yes, they were irish travelers.

The groups know as the Irish Travellers are just plain dirtbags. Scammers and cons that give the true Romanis a bad name.

They are just plain filth.

At the moment I have two periods I am interested in: Around 1900s and around the fall of Ceausescu in 1989 in Romania. The two periods are linked. And it would be helpful to know a bit more about the now-a-days affairs. I am looking for stories and background information that will help flesh out the story not specifics just to add a feel of authenticity.

Romanians are disproportionally represented in the British prison population.

Disproportionate means over ten or twenty times the rate for any other nationality by numbers in the UK.

Romanian Gypsy gangs are prevalent shoplifters and pickpockets in London.

BUT - Gypsies IN Romania were/are oppressed and ostracised by other Romanians.

Whether the gangs in London are representative of Romanian gypsies in general? I don't know but if you ask a non-gypsy Romanian they are likely to say that their gypsies are (insert many derogatory terms here). Whether that is a historic attitude dating back years, or is based on current knowledge? I don't know but they have a very poor reputation in Romania.

"Not to be confused with Romanians, an unrelated ethnic group.

Romani or Roma people, an ethnic group of Northern Indian origin; now living dispersed in Europe, the Americas and Asia
Romani language, any of several Indo-Aryan languages of the Romani people"
