Hey there,

I would like to get to know a bit more about the Romani culture and their views, habits and even their view on sex. I'm doing a bit of research on the subject for a story but I found lots of sources lacking emotional content and staying very far from real situations and real people.
I have lived in Romania for a while and got to experience some of the culture but sadly also how they were treated most of the time.

For starters, even if you're writing amateur erotica fiction, it's better to refer to the people and their culture as Romani instead of "gypsy."

Some may think it's being too "P.C." as most Westerners grew up with the word/term as seemingly innocuous fashion and still use it as such, but as an adult I prefer learning about others different from myself and evolving to respect them rather than being stubborn in my non-Romani privilege remaining ignorant about casual ethnic slurs.

They are very secretive cultures. Anyone who knows any gypsies well, would probably be someone who is a researcher or know someone who has left it and could be in hiding from their families.

You might watch the movie "The man who cried." I am told it is generally somewhat accurate for the time period in the film.

Gypsie comes from the word "Egyptian." The Romani have a legend that they migrated out of Egypt and now roam Europe.

The term "gyp" is derivec from Gypsie.

if i googled correctly that was the work of irish travelers which are very much like romani in a lot of ways, but aren't actual "gypsys" at all.

It depends whose definition you use, there has also been some intermarriage between the groups. Yes, they were irish travelers.

Romanians are disproportionally represented in the British prison population.

Disproportionate means over ten or twenty times the rate for any other nationality by numbers in the UK.

Romanian Gypsy gangs are prevalent shoplifters and pickpockets in London.

BUT - Gypsies IN Romania were/are oppressed and ostracised by other Romanians.

Whether the gangs in London are representative of Romanian gypsies in general? I don't know but if you ask a non-gypsy Romanian they are likely to say that their gypsies are (insert many derogatory terms here). Whether that is a historic attitude dating back years, or is based on current knowledge? I don't know but they have a very poor reputation in Romania.
