There are names I won't use in an erotic story because they would seem uncomfortable. I have never used my two daughter's names or my own. I have used my wife's but by her request and in a special story she wanted me to write.

Well, on a lost bet she told me to use mine in a story and I'm finding its really awkward sounding each time I type it.

Anyone use their real first name and if you did, was it odd, or no big deal?

I used my name in a novel I wrote back in 2008, I believe it was. However, it remains in a file, unedited. Starting over would be easier than fixing the 80k words it has.

But I would imagine it wouldn't have to be a total rewrite. I'm sure you could 'lift' sections and plug them into a new work. I just did that recently borrowed heavily from something previously written, but not posted anywhere.

Would you leave your name or use find replace and change it to something else?

Oh, according to those who read that piece, it only needs some light editing. I don't agree with them. Thus, it remains where it is.

To answer your question . . . I would leave all the names as they are.

No, I've never used my true name, nor my wife's. My kids' names are so common that it doesn't bother me to use them. I'm not envisioning them when I write and use their given names.

Neither of my daughter's names are what I call unique, but they're not overly common either so I think that's what makes it harder to dissociate they're not names you hear all the time.

I never do. I don't want "me" to seep into the story. The story is never about me, and I want to keep it that way.

Granted my life experience is all I have to work from, but it still isn't me. LW readers already assume that every story posted is autobiographical. I don't want to encourage that consciously or subconciously.

No, but then I don't go by my first name in real life either. My mother had a sense of humor but not a lick of sense.

One of the first stories I wrote I used my real first name. At the time I wrote the story it sounded just fine. Then after I posted it and read it online, I really didn't like it. I pulled the story, changed the name and re-posted.

And that's when John Abernathy was born. He has appeared in a lot of my stories. Both erotic and non-erotic.

I'm much the same. I generally avoid using my kids' names, and some other family names, but I can't avoid too much or I'll run out of names. :)

No, I've never used my own name in a story.

I am a bit odd when in first person I use my own name if it's a male. When it is a woman I have to use the correct name. Once I am comfortable with the story and all the glitches and stupidities are out I go find and replace so that it no longer has my name in it. It makes for easier writing when in first person. But done with the writing I want my name gone.

And I avoid all the names in my family and also the names of my co-workers as I see them a lot and I don't want to associate them to the name of a character in a story. It just doesn't feel right. Lucky there are so many names to chose from it is hardly an inconvenience.

So I can relate to you LoveCraft, it is odd and uncomfortable for sure.

I've used my own first name before, though that's the only one. I avoid the real first names of pretty much every close family member.

Didn't really have any issue writing it with my name.

My own initial 'A' turns up as the narrator's initial in most of my stories, as I generally put something of myself into a yarn. Using the initial got clunky (we're not writing The Story of O here), so I looked around for a name. As I needed a plot connection at the time with a female character Alexandra, I started using Alex.

So Alex pretty much turned into my alt character's name, in other stories.

Don't think I'd ever use a close family name (although I sail close from time to time).

I've used real names for real people with fictitious story elements (but where the story contains a grain of truth); but fictitious names where a story has a beach full of truth. I do have one story where it's her story, her name. Not sure why that happened.

What category is it? Gay Male? Transexual and Cross-Dressers?

We want answers! :p

Back to the point, I haven't seen any story till date that has used my full name. It's not a name I'd use myself if I were a smut author, but I don't think I'll be weirded out or something along those lines.

Nah, its a hardcore femdom piece. I told her pegging was not an option.

My thing is my first name is so common, but in general I only recall one story using it here.

Should have gone with my middle name "Conrad"

On occasion I've used names of people I know, just to help capture some of their personality and keep the relationship status easy to remember and keep consistent. To keep things from getting 'weird', as soon as the first draft is done, the find/replace comes out. After all the editing is done, I no longer see them in the story (yay!).

My own name? NO. Family? Nope.

If for no other reason, just in case the wrong someone finds out about my secret Lit habit, I don't want things to get more awkward than they would be already. Not to mention the questions about if I though about <person> that way.

I'm writing a story now that I use my first and last name, real names.

I've written many stories with my first name and with me as a character.

Mixing reality with fiction, it's fun because I can be true to myself without having to invent a character.

I haven't used my name, or my wife's. Not sure why, just trying to be anonymous I guess.

I've used my first name for a character or two. One main and a a couple of lesser players. Odd though is when you open another author's story and see a character that shares your first and last name. I have had that happen twice.
