What makes someone an authority on what an american is?

Just as the Bible dictates specifically what a child of God is, so too does The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America dictate what an American is:

It's really simple:

If you don't naturally believe in your Creator and his gift of inalienable individual liberty to every human, your're not an American...

...you're just a wannabe, dick.

I thought for sure you were going to end it with ..... you're just a unicorn turd.

I'm a bludday immigrant. Never did learn how to skate. Play street/floor hockey. Goalie. I'm a sieve! Tried curling once. I have two types of snowshoes! A scar from playing hockey, blood stain on my jersey. I have had huskies try steal my ice fishing catch, had bears come right into camp. Had to follow dad's path through snow pulling toboggan to town to get supplies after snowed in with no hydro for over a week. Voted NDP, Liberal and Conservative in my life. I AM CANADIAN!

It's so weird seeing Eyer-the-Liar take so to heart a book that was, in large part, transcribed by illiterates.

I recently saw a survey asking USAnians to describe their ethnic heritage. The largest proportion are German and are concentrated in the upper midwest. Next largest are Irish, mostly around urban areas. Next are Italians, mostly in the northeast but also around San Francisco Bay. Those describing their heritage as American were heavily in the South. I was not stereotyping, merely reporting.

Lefties prefer to ID themselves as a European instead of American.....not shocking. Most of them fucking hate the USA and everything it stands for, it would kill most of them to say anything nice about the place.

SAR on both sides of family, through 3 out of 4 grandparents trace my American ancestry back to mid-17th century or earlier. I am ready to pass judgement on the americanness of anything or anyone; should anyone inquire.

Sorry! Best we can do is allow you to speak before the committee.

Sorry, you are trapped in an alternate universe where good is bad and death is life. The actual reason those rednecks ID as Murcan is that they don't know fuck-all about their heritage. I am quite aware of the Quakers and Cherokees on one side of my ancestry and the English and Scots on the other side. I'm only a couple cousins away from Wyatt Earp, as if that matters. (Yeah, I've seen a family tree. Lived near Tombstone, too.)

Who hates America? I'd put lawbreaking tax-evading multinational corporations at the top of the list, followed closely by ignorant racists, fundamentalists, nutjob traitors, and corrupt pols. YMMV.

True enough. Maybe they would benefit from reading this 5 part article called "What American's Can Teach European's". I totally loath to read to multi part articles but I have to say this one makes some very cogent points.

What Americans can Teach Europeans

No.

Oh really, where in England/Scotland are you from? How long have you lived there and yet managed to be a member of the Cherokee nation at the same time....holy fuck!!

They ID as Murican because that's where they are from.

My dad is Korean, he was born in Seoul and has a green card.

My mother is 2nd gen American with German/Swedish and Norwegian/Nisqually parents.

I'm an American, I was born, raised, live in and will likely die in America. I'm not a Korean, German or Norwegian. But then again how could I know anything about my heritage, I'm just a stupid redneck who identifies as M'urican.

Don't forget people too ashamed to say they are Americans and instead come up with some poser bullshit like.....Scottish or Italian.

If someone asks you what your heritage is it's just as correct to say it's German (or whatever) as it is to say it's American. It all depends on how many generations the person answering the question wants to go back. It has nothing to do with politics.

We aren't talking about heritage though, we are talking about what you ID as.

If you were born raised and live in Madison Wisconsin and identify as a German and not an American? You're a fuckin' poser.

It was a fun jab.....and you're right, both sides hate the US the further you get from center.

I think you didn't read carefully what you replied to then.

I consider myself a first generation American of English descent. I identify strongly with the English, because I spent time there as a child, and all my relations, as far back as I can trace them, were English (although there was family rumor of a bit of Irish thrown in, I can't find it). Both parents emigrated from the UK to the USA following WWII. I identify myself as an American, because that is where I was born, raised, and live. All my English relations have always considered me an American, and don't give it a second thought.

The last two pages were so much fun to read… .:)

totally interesting question but doesn't get to the meat of the question or issues America is facing or will be facing.

If you live in America you speak English, period.

I'm all for learning other languages and can speak two understand three.

Next, this bullshit thing called something American. ie African American or Mexican American. totally wrong. you are American period. if you want to be African - then move there. if you want to be a Mexican - then move there.

bring politically correct is fucking wrong. people need to balls up. a yoga class was pulled due to someone being offended. I'd have some choice words for that person offended "fuck you, you panzie retard"

Though the article is good, much better than the high-nosed headline, it doesn't face the real problems other cuntries got with America.

1. People don't have a problem with America being "imperialist and warmongering", they've got a problem with only being this at their interests. They destroy dicatorships and shout "freedom", but they destroy democracies, too, if it fits their interest. From all empires ever existed, the American is the least reliable. Everybody can become an ally, and everybody can lose the state of an ally. Iraq was the best example.

2. People don't have a problem with the CIA, not more like with any other foreign intelligence service. If ever, they've got problems with the shit they're doing. If ever real subhuman shit happens in the world, it's rarely the CIA is not involved. A lot of this happens because of America's foreign policy.

3. Whatever people criticize on the behavior of American people - they rarely look in the mirror. Americans aren't much more hypocrite, fake, slimey or sneaky than people from other nations. But for most people in Europe, Americans are hard to rate. And this got a lot to do with different society values.

4. Given the size of America, nobody can be surprised of a lot of ignorant people, and Europe isn't different in this, that's right. But the despise for American Dumbness got less to do with ignorance, more with the attitude regarding that ignorance. Americans may like the thought that somebody with the intelligence of a rat can become president out of pure willpower. Europeans scares this, and they've got more and more the impression, dumbness is common sense in America. GWB enhanced this impression, Obama did the opposite.

5. American culture is loved all over the world. So anybody saying Americans got no culture are dropdead wrong. This saying is more a rebellion against the superiority of American culture in everyday life, and even the author pointed out American culture, though beloved, isn't always the best, in case of McDonalds or Starbucks, it's even a deterioration.

In the end, if people think we can learn from the Americans: we do all day. Our problem is more: what things shouldn't we learn from them? Especially Germans begin more and more to question their blind following, so saying "You can learn from us" means "you're not American enough"...which isn't much their goal....

This one was good:

Don't get it. You need to explain it a bit more.

While there is a degree of that, I don't see as much PCnness in it, as you do. To me, that's a practical way to describe someone's ethnicity or race (if significant or required in certain situations).
While you might, in theory, substitute black for african american without offending anyone, there's no such substitute for mexican-americans etc.

An aside: Recently a Muslim woman, wearing a hijab, was verbally abused on a train in Newcastle on Tyne. The abuser told her to go back home and raise terrorists. She protested that she and her parents had been born in Newcastle.

The other passengers turned on the abuser and shouted at him so fiercely that he left the carriage at the next stop. They told the woman that he was an asshole and she should ignore everything he had said.

Her final comment? "They made me proud to be a Geordie.".

She is Muslim, but sees herself as a proud citizen of Newcastle on Tyne.

Anyone, no matter where they or their parents come from, who sees themselves as a local - IS a local.

So anyone who sees themselves as American, IS American.
