Changing the independent variable "Participants" doesn't change the formula. It just changes the dependent variable "Group Sex".

Besides that configuration in a couple tales, I've written that as three incestuously bi sisters, one young male with sufficient energy, and their girlfriend and her mother. On a more practical note:
Each character you add to the scene or orgy is going to increase the difficulty of writing the scene. I found that writing a four person sex scene was roughly twice as difficult as writing a threesome. I have written a scene with something like twenty people having sex in various combinations in the same room; that particular abomination will never see publication.
Not because there was anything extraordinarily kinky, but because it proved nearly impossible to keep everything straight.Note that the same thing applies to any group scene; a four-way conversation is more difficult to keep track of than a simple dialogue.

This is incorrect. There's at least one woman who likes to be gangbanged, or at least she did on one particular occasion. The whole thing was her idea. And as far as I know, there's nothing seriously wrong with her. She just wanted to be gangbanged.

In its normal use, 'gangbang' suggests that the gangbangee is at a disadvantage. If your friend 'wanted' to be gangbanged, then I would suggest that she wasn't looking for a gangbang; she was simply looking to have sexual encounters with a succession of partners.

It's not my thing, as I personally think gangbangs are gross, but I don't assume that everyone that wants them has some sort of issues anymore than I think that of someone who loves anal sex (another thing I'm not particularly interested in).

Limbs are limbs but the story isn't about limbs. It's about the people involved and attached to the limbs. It's not just the sex. It's the interaction of who and whom. It's the emotions and feelings. Otherwise it's just a fuck fest with no rhyme or reason. Other than sex and titillation.

Sometime they're bit players. I have a beach-party scene with a three-man standing bugger-chain and a girl up front blowing Lucky Louis. The three guys are totally replaceable so I just describe them as surfer-types. No further identification is needed.
I must pay more attention when the players are named and described. In a big bedroom scene Judy's mother Muriel (both chestnut-haired) pegs her pale dentist husband Ted with a strap-on while he fucks his daughter; the three blonde next-door Heinecke sisters (Faith, Hope, and Ann) are throbbing in a daisychain; and tall, lean, dark-haired Ron is doggie-fucking Mediterranean goddess Maria. Then they switch around. A bit of choreography is needed to keep them straight, story-wise. And eight is probably the limit, although I might be able to squeeze in Mrs Heinecke and Faith's black g.f. Sofia too.
And each joining is a separate incident, with each participant feeling and tasting and thinking on their own. Each relationship is distinct -- although I may gloss-over the details to build a sensuous image.
More characters work in longer stories when they've had time and space to be introduced, for the reader to form a mental image of them. Most of the two or three dozen fuckers in a short orgy piece will necessarily be spear-carriers. When the football team engages the cheer squad we'll only focus on the quarterback and the cheer queen; the others are entertaining background.
