Anyone had one? Know much about 'em?

One of my closest friends had a stroke at the weekend. She's only 30. Today she started her speech therapy. Apparently she's had three brain bleeds, lost the use of her right side and can't communicate well.

Are strokes likely to be followed by more strokes? Seriously, I know fuck all about strokes and if you google anything medical it all ends in death.

i am so sorry about your friend. :rose:

i know close to nothing when it comes to strokes, other than the recovery road is a long one. Jennifer!

The severity of strokes depends on where they happen. A nose stroke is nuthin, an ear stroke is a problem but not lethal. Eye strokes are dangerous for blindness. A stroke inside a tumor might be a good thing. I imagine many could take a major blow out in their neocortex and experience no signs. You don't want a stroke where it matters...like in the penis.

Aah thanks Neci. You know she's so fucking healthy it's unreal. Always training for different marathons and such. Really looks after herself. It's so sad because she's got a two year old in and out of hospital all the time too. She had to have bone marrow taken the other week, I'm thinking this has been brought on by massive stress. Assuming stress can bring on strokes.

JENNIFER?

One of my friends died from a stroke at age 31.
She kissed her family goodnight and went to bed early with a headache. Never woke up.
She also left behind 3 kids under six years of age.

Strokes scare me.

I hope your friend recovers as well as possible :rose:

I'm so very sorry to hear about your friend. I have had quite a few friends and relatives suffer from some level of them. One thing I have to say is that given enough time and therapy some almost miraculous progress can be made. I am assuming that the brain has to make new pathways to carry the info. Likely none of them are ever back to square one but huge positive changes over a long period.

I'm sorry about your friend. 30 is a very young age to have a stroke.

Basically a stroke is loss of oxygen to a spot on the brain. It can be caused by several things such as an aneurysm or plaque from your arteries becoming dislodged and thus creating a road block somewhere on the brain where it cannot be feed oxygen via blood.

Does your friend have a history of migraine headaches? What side was her stroke on? Does she have other deficits as a result?

I went round the other week and she was complaining of tiredness and she had done a pregnancy test cos she couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Also on one of her runs she rang her husband to come pick her up as she was fucked. That is not like her. She does the Great North Run and such.

The really galling thing is she went to A&E a couple of weeks back and they sent her away. Praps if they did an MRI this could have been prevented. Cunts.

She never gets headaches, ever.

She can't communicate at all and has lost the use of her right side. And apparently suffered three brain bleeds?

It sounds as though she may have a genetic predisposition to the incidents.

Losing her right side means that the stroke was on the left side of her brain.

I mention those things because at the age of 20 my best friend suffered from a stroke on her left side as well. When I visited her for the first time after she was also unable to speak and lost all use of her right side.

In the course of one year of rehab she was able to return to college and graduate a year later as a nurse. Your friend has youth on her side which does wonders for healing and recovery.

She needs a good rehab plan, tenacity, and the support of family and friends.

Sweeps probably knows way more about strokes than I do.

Sorry about your friend .
While a lot of sufferers can live a long and productive life ,there is a stronger possibility of another stroke than if she had never had one .There are a lot of variables in strokes and I think Jennifer is the best person to give an opinion ,so send her a PM

So you're telling us different strokes for different folks?

Sorry, but I felt someone had to say it. I've also known a youngish stroke sufferer, Fata, though at 36 older than your friend. Also very fit, and apart from a slight stammer and, for some reason, diminished smell, he's fine now. The brain can bypass damage with new pathways amazingly well sometimes, I understand.

I had a stroke and my brother had one, both of us before we were 50. His was worse than mine but neither of us has any serious lasting effects although his speech is not what it used to be.
Each stroke is different and some people have one and never have another while other people have several. Not sure of the reasons for that. I'm sure my doctor told me at the time but all I heard was "you're gonna live." Everything after that was blah blah blah.

This is good news. Nikki is very, very positive and has lots of guts. She's got a huge supportive family too. And I know she'll want to get better for a her little girl who is also quite sick.

I'll know more when I see her but she's not up for non-family visitors as yet. I think she's embarrassed about speaking etc but as I pointed out to her husband, she'll still make more sense than me!

I wonder sometimes if being a stoic is all that it is cracked up to be. Maybe if we learned to listen to our bodies more we might foresee some of these problems. My European ancestors always said don't worry, you will be fine. Some of my friends did experience tell tale signs but chose to ignore them, as do I now. I sincerely hope she has a great recovery and runs the Great North again.

This is comforting. Glad you are both ok. :)

Our local hospital has a terrible rep for treatment. They send patients home half dead. Another one of my friend's husbands has had 12 inches of bowel removed due to cancer two weeks ago. She showed me the pics - fuck me it's like someone threw a grenade at him. And they sent him home like that. So then he got a massive infection.

It's all about beds, saving money and cuts. The hospital I mention was on the local news at the weekend for lack of nurses, saying they are having to employ nurses from abroad. I know when my Dad was in for a week a few months before he died I had to finish work early every day to make sure he was fed in there. With dementia patients they haven't a clue.

I haven't had a stroke, no. Although I think I may've had a mini one when kbate started going on about putting a ring on her missus. My head was spinning and my temperature was high and my heart was beating really fast.

Fata! I've missed you. The board has been quite dull. Killswitch threads and something about a pony. I don't know. I mentioned you and kbate in the share the love thread. Kbate posted a spew emoticon.

I hope your friend is ok.

This might help a bit.

Hey, sore subject with me. Both of my parents lived to a ripe old age but at the end, the local hospital treated them like shit in my opinion. With the way things work now, (in the US), they weren't likely to recover so they were shown the door and sent to hospice. It may have been inevitable but there was so little compassion, no empathy from the doctors. I'm not sure living a long time is anything to wish for. You can become as helpless as a young child and have no one to advocate for you.
