Living in Southern California I have a fair bit of experience with ESL people. Speaking English well enough to be understood and writing English are two different animals. I've known a few people who as long as they were speaking I understood them just fine, but when they'd write me emails I would have to read them a dozen times to figure out what the fuck they were trying to say.

You're So right! I don't know much about ESL or India, but for a foreigner, there's a huge difference between fluency in spoken english (short sentences) versus written english (longer phrases, different syntax etc.)
