Does poetry have to be 750 words long? I think 750 is the minimum length for stories, but it seems long for poems. I was thinking about posting some poetry.

No. I don't think there is minimum. Well except it wouldn't be poem without at least a second line for the verse.

Indeed, there is no word limit. A lot of Haikus on the site (17 syllables total). Please do post your poetry - you might also check out the Poetry Feedback & Discussion - the poets are generally a kinder, gentler bunch. But rigorous.

There is no established length for poetry. However, if you submit something like "Ugh, bug" it would probably be rejected as being too short.

Thanks guys. I worked on something today, but it's turning into a story! I'll have to keep at it. I appreciate your help.

Sometimes I write fifty-word stories.

I submitted the first few as Poetry because they were far short of the 750 word minimum for a story.

After a few, I decided to write the fifty-word stories in sets of 15.

50 x 15 = 750

The few words in each title plus my copyright statement took the sets well over the 750 words.

With Poetry as with Stories, the length is whatever is appropriate for what you are saying. A Haiku might be enough, or a several thousand word heroic epic poem.

LOL, go for it! Is it Summer Lovin'?

I'm not sure what makes a good Summer Lovin story, but that isn't stopping me: I've got two I'm considering entering already. Hopefully I will be able to find an editor who has the time and is willing to take me on. I've got someone looking at a few hundred words in one story and a request out in the editor's forum. We shall see what happens!

I decided the thing I worked on this morning is a poem, after all. It's in the erotic poem queue and should go live soon. I'm thrilled. It's my first erotic poem!

It's written in first person and is about an experience I had when I lived in NYC. It will be interesting to see how it goes over here at Lit. I confess I haven't spent much time seeing what other people have done with poetry. I hope people like it.

oh, so good to read this Ogg!

I came to the same conclusion myself. The piece I was working on was shy of the 750 mark, so I was going to pub it as a poem. I worked on it a little more today and it went well over the 750 mark --

BUT!

The more I looked at it, the more different it felt from my other stories. It's first person, and it's also about an experience I actually had, so it's much more personal than anything I would put in a story. I kept trying to figure out which category to put it in and I finally realized.

IT'S A POEM! :)

So, it's coming out soon on the poetry list and more important, I really feel that's where it belongs.

I appreciate your help.

For what it's worth, I submitted a long piece to Poetry With Audio and was asked to resubmit to Text With Audio because it was over 750 words; apparently the poetry category was only for short pieces. I don't know whether the same cutoff applies to non-audio.

I got rejected and asked for clarification. I got clear and fixed the issue but now my poem is just sitting in the queue. :(
