The Official Authors' Hangout National Nude Day 2015 Contest Support Thread

At least one of the Incest and LW wins are recent. This is from the beginning to fuck-knows-when 2014. As with the other list, there are buttloads of stories that can't be checked any longer, because they're not on the site.

In fact, I'm fairly certain several stories that were available when I did this list were gone when I did the one a few days ago.

For this list, I believe I added a couple of stories where I absolutely knew the category -- Aurora's Erotic Horror and Danielle's Romance -- even though they're no longer available on the site.

Incest is and always has been heavily trolled. Add to that the large vote totals and the resulting increase of "liked it but didn't love it" 4s, and it's no surprise Incest is a tough road.

If you delve even deeper, you quickly discover that many of the stories in other categories are also romances.

The moral of the story is that happily ever after endings are the most likely to win contests. People like them, and that's hardly surprising.

So true on the last part, my best stories(at least number wise) are romances, but in other categories, 2 in mature and one in first time.

I think of late, sweeps hurt incest a little as well when you have that many votes they don't really help a whole lot. I think hey all has one in this contest that still had close to 2500 after a two hundred vote sweep...not going to be a lot of score change with numbers that huge.

Do you know when the last LW winner was? I'd be interested to see it because it seems since I've been here its hard to get an H there never mind win something.

I'm fairly certain the last LW winner was at some point between 2010 and now. That's as close as I can nail it down without going back through the contest pages again, and I have that out of my system for a few months :p

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it at some point in a post, but that would be almost as tedious of a search as going through the contest pages.

Thanks for the grunt work you did do.

This is hard to read, but I'm not sure how to format it much better...

The columns are the category and total # of stories in the cat as of today. The next column is the % of stories in that particular category, as of today. And finally, the % of contest winners in that category, using RR's numbers with the following exception: I added the categories of the 6 winners in the Valentine's Day and April Fool's contests this year, because it was easy to do it.

I then bolded % contest winners whose values differed about twice or more from the total number of stories in that category.

One could draw some rather knee-jerk reactions: if you want to win a contest, don't write stories in Celebrities, Fetish, Non-con/Reluctance, and Toys & Masturbation categories. (I ignored cats whose % total stories was very low.) Presumably there are fewer readers in these categories among the general contest readership, or they also ultimately prefer other cats such as Romance.

There are some cats that are highly favored among contest winners, as RejectReality already said - Romance is a standout, but Erotic Horror and SciFi are also big standouts relative to their total story representation. Either those category have very loyal appreciative fans and/or the really well-written stories in those categories appeal to a lot of readers.

I am oversimplifying, of course - I am sure someone/many will find a bunch of mistakes in my analysis, which is not meant to be anything as kind of "huh, look at that."

But... huh, look at that.

But I was just starting a non-con celebrity dildo fetish story

Erotic Horror may deserve an asterisk by its bolded total since it has an annual contest nearly devoted to it, in the sense that many more Halloween entries are in EH than in any other contest, skewing the percentage.

If you want to see tedious grunt work, you should see the old contest tracks that took an hour or better each night to compile. For example:

http://darkniciad.com/hotlink_pics/earth_day_2011_final.htm

Stand warned that I couldn't seem to remember to change the previous and next links on the bottom of the daily updates for some reason. The top such links work.

Very good point, but it doesn't quite work out to the ratio of over-representation: I calculated back over 8 years (including H2007): out of 21 winners still on Lit (remember we lost some authors in the intervening years), 6 were in Erotic Horror (28.6%, just over a quarter), 3 in Erotic Couplings, 3 in Gay Male, 3 in Non-Human, 3 in Romance, 2 in SciFi, and 1 in Novels and Novellas. That doesn't account for the over-representation of EH contest winners vs total stories.

The Halloween Contest is virtually a one-category contest, and EH doesn't tend to be written EXCEPT for Halloween.

Wow, there are some really intense stories in this contest. Wide variety. Nice work by all the authors.

Saturday Night School is a very hot story imho by a very new author here.

lovecraft68, as often happens, blows things away with something unexpected.

Jean Goes Skinny Dipping by loerics is a wonderful trip to an era I love. And then it stretched me with with the Steinbeck homage and the....well, it's a category I don't usually read and yet I liked it. Very long, and I haven't yet finished this one.

All are 5s to me.

One of the LW wins was Nude Day Contest 2009. It was my story The Accidental Nudist Cabin. 1.7 Million Views.

A story like that couldn't win today. The trolling in the category is too high. It's become too divisive. That story stayed at #1 in the HOF for over a year, until it was 1-bombed into the stoneage in 2011. It's rarely on the front page of the HOF anymore. Sometimes after the big sweeps it'll show up in the top 10, and it's hit #1 a few times since. It still gets a stupid number of views.

Crazy high number of votes this time around. 836 votes on 21K views. That's one of the highest percentages I've ever had. Moderate score, certainly not a contender for anything.

Kethandra's entry seems like a winner. Well justified. One of the more literate entries in a long time, very creative, and it actually fits the theme - my favorite so far.

Small sweep at some point today. I think I'm down 3-4 votes and popped up .01, but it's been flirting with the same .01 range for 500 votes :p

I saw a similar one this morning: 4 votes gone, score up .01, to where it had been most of last week. Yesterday, 5 votes gone, no change. That's all since the big one 7/3. I've kept better track this time.
Mine fluctuated ±.04 from vote 28 (when I woke up on the first day of postings - I like the exposure of early contest entry :)) until now, with a high at vote 31 and a low at 147. At the moment, with 563 votes, it is ±.01 from where it was at vote 28.

yesterdays: thank you for the above and the comment. And you do know your name bothers auto correct something fierce?

Two of mine jumped just past the 4.50 H mark.

Sweeping a few votes from a small total can change the rating by a noticeable amount.

And therein lies the problem with the final sweep

The 4.76 story story with 90/100 votes is going to easily overtake the story in the low 4.8's with hundreds of votes.

Although with this contest being swept as often as it has maybe we won't see any huge jumps near the end this time.

I agree. I think there ought to be some weighting or adjustment to reflect the number of votes. But it isn't that simple. A high voting category such as Incest would tend to win all the contests.

My only STORY to get a W - Christmas Truce - has 719 votes in the Humor and Satire category. Perhaps it should have been in Romance, but that number of votes in Humor and Satire puts it close to the top of the Top List for that category.

Incest is the highest voted, but not necessarily the highest scored. I've seen a lot of incest contest stories blow past 2k votes, but have scores in the mid 4.6's which means it wouldn't really be a contender.

But you're right basing it on vote number would eliminate a lot of categories

But vote number is what is skewing everything now as in low vote number so we are at the opposite extreme.

A story with hundreds of votes can win, but it has to be....pretty much like the story that has been in the lead since the beginning in this one, it has to start out red hot and never slow down.

If a story with hundreds of votes ever falls down in the low 4.80's it is not going to win. The sweep is not going to take it past the 4.86 that it seems you need to win right now. Example...mine started out with a crazy total...a yeah this won't last total at about 70 or so votes....by about 95 votes it had a nice score, several points lower....so six hours and 100 votes in I knew...I'm out. I didn't enter to win, but its the point that it is becoming that skewed that I can see it coming so easy.

Score is the other sign of how the sweeps have also gotten to where you have to wonder if in some stories they think there is such a thing as a legit low vote.

I placed twice a couple of years ago with 4.82/3 stories others did as well.

The last few have had 4.86 stories sitting back in the cold.

Which brings me to something I mentioned a long time ago, but I still consider in these things.

If you post a regular submission and you have a 4.82 after 500 votes would you be happy as the author? Damn straight you would, who wouldn't?

But how is it that in contests stories in the 4.8's still go up....how the hell trolled can you be if you're sitting at 4.83? I mean I wish all my stories were "beaten down' like that....

So....in general it seems the sweeps are....I don't know what they are except not effective at least not when deciding winners/losers....they get rid of obvious trolling which helps everyone, but near the top it just gets crazy

The biggest jumps in score and highest percentages of votes swept are almost always below the midpoint of the field. Most often, stories have both distinctions, and were never contenders. I can't think of one time where anything in the top 10 was #1 in either category, and most of the time it isn't even close.

If you're only looking at the top tier, you're getting a horribly skewed perception of what the sweeps are doing.

Well, that's fucking silly.

4.79 from 29 votes, 3,576 reads and I'm doing better than you guys?

"It's OK boss, if we win, we'll give the cash to Laurel so she can go find some bloke can do the maths."

Ella adds, shaking her head with disbelief (and trust me, Ella and maths is like a virgin in a Catholic girls school, it just ain't happening), "that's like me saying if my figure was 479 - 29 -3576 I'd be the most beautiful girl on the planet..."

Cue booty gag...

"Boss, no, just don't do that, ok?"

I'm confused:

LW can't win, except it has.
More popular categories are better, because it's harder for one-bombers to impact a score with high votes; except when high voting categories have too many people "good, but not great to me" votes.
Entering late is good, except the numbers don't agree with that.
Entering a lower read category is sandbagging, except the numbers don't seem to reflect that, either. (Mind Control, Essays, Letters, Toys, Transsexuals, etc.)

Some categories have more rabid fans seems to be the only claim that might hold water when looking at the percentage of wins by Sci/Fi, Horror, & Romance compared to the breadth of the story list. But then again, you get categories that win close to their story percentage: Exhibition, First Time, Letters, Mature.

I don't know, folks. It all sounds like guessing lottery numbers. You know the balls with bigger numbers don't float to the top as often as single digit numbers. It has something to do with how much ink is used on the ball. Or maybe it's the other way around? :)

Good luck everyone!

Thank you, 3T! I can live with being literate and creative. I appreciate the compliments.

Kethandra, Getting a compliment by Tx Tall Tales is quite the honor. He's been around for awhile and has some of the best stories on the site and is well respected.

My story dropped 16 votes to just over 400 but picked up .14 pts to just above the H Didn't take long for two votes to come in and lower it a pt.

Best of luck to all in the contest.
With respect
DG
