I thought I'd start a thread for those that prefer chatting in Google Hangouts. Since Yahoo has been giving me (and others) so many problems, I've switched to Hangouts as my preferred client, and encourage others to also. If you have Gmail, you have Hangouts. Use Gmail in your browser to chat on a PC and download the iPhone or Android app to chat on your phone.

I've read about Chinese couples 'sexting' each other on Google Hangouts and then being arrested. You don't have to worry about Google reporting you. They will.

Another event a friend informed me ideas a young lady, 22, in the United Kingdom having a role playing fantasy with a friend - I believe she was participating an incestuous fantasy (I think if I remember correctly she was role playing as her partners daughter - over the age of consent) and was arrested. It has obviously caused a great deal of trouble.

I think playing innocently with immunity online isn't possible these days. With Google it's definitely impossible.

I wouldn't touch Google with a bargepole, nor Facebook, nor Microsoft.

For web searches try https://Startpage.com or its sister engine https://ixquick.com

If you can make the switch away from Windoze to Linux, there are some excellent anonymising options, eg TAILS or JonDo. For those folk who can't access Pirate Bay, Kickasstorrents etc, because your ISP has been threatened by the government, these OS's will eliminate your problem. The latter may be available for Mac users, I don't have that info.

Bottom line is, if the a company's server is located in the US then any notion of privacy is false. Probably true also for the UK seeing as our GCHQ and your NSA constantly try to outdo each other in terms of privacy invasion.
