An Open Letter to the Ladies of Lit

Every day, a woman should hear she is beautiful and be complimented on her looks. I stop strangers and tell them they look fabulous and hope it brings smile that lasts the day. Just have to open your mouth and say words and so many things happen.

I'd like to endorse this thought. I've encountered many truly wonderful Lit ladies: warm, kind, receptive, caring, giving people. The sad part is that many of them probably still don't realise how great they are, so this thread is a step in the right direction to correct that.

I wish that I had the confidence to do that! Every day in RL, I encounter ladies who are lovely, outwardly and inwardly, but who seem in need of a reminder of that. My heart tells me that I won't come to any harm if I express that sentiment with sincerity and without any expectation, but my brain warns me off for fear of appearing creepy. :(

The easiest approach goes like this.... "Excuse me, I'm not sure if anyone has told you yet today, but you look absolutely fabulous/amazing/beautiful etc. I hope I'm not the first one to say it, because you deserve to be told that." Don't stick around and walk away. You don't appear like a creep/stalker and your comment comes across as more genuine. If they want to talk, by all means, but just walk away and know you made her day.

Thanks for the encouragement! :)

I have the self-confidence to be able to do that in the way that you describe. I'd probably improvise my words as I think it might sound stilted to reel off a pre-prepared script (and dangerously close to a chat-up line). The right sort of smile also helps (natural, not forced!), with momentary twinkling but not lingering eye-contact.

My issue is that I know that there's a wide spectrum of interpretations that ladies will put on this: some may regard even the friendliest unsolicited approach as creepy and threatening. I'd like to make people's day, but not at the cost of ruining mine.

Still, I'll bear in mind what you say. :)

If you continue worrying about responses, you'll never do it. If you are sincere in your approach, it'll be received that way by them. I give them the compliment and its up them how they take it. I've yet to have a negative response, just saying. ;)
 
I know it isn't the same for ladies to do it to other ladies - I'll also do it sometimes to guys - but I'll pick out something that stands out to me that I really like that they're wearing, and compliment that. Like "I really like your earrings." or hat, or scarf or something like that. A lot of people, even with something as small as that seem to like it. :] I like making people smile.
