"The only reason that someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate," Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said. "It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine, and we will bring that person to justice. ... This is one hateful person."

He was a disturbed individual. A piece of shit.

What is there to argue about?

Do you want to assign motives and a bigger picture to someone that is obviously insane?
Use a tragedy to push your own beliefs based on the acts of a mad man?
Does that make sense on any level?

Sharks in the North, racist mass murderers in the South. When I visit I shall stick firmly to Central Carolina.

There is a town called North, South Carolina south of central South Carolina. I have to go to the south to go to North.

:)

He seems to like this look. What do the patches on his jacket signify??

My real concern is whether he was a loner. Time will tell. But someone likely took the picture of him in the swamp with those insignias on his jacket. The KKK isn't a thing of the past around here.

You would be right at home in an English town centre. That sort of thing is what we call planning.

It's a tightrope, Thor.

The guy has apartheid-era South African flag and the Rhodesian flag on his jacket, so he's made his motives pretty clear.

As far as I know, nobody has made a psychiatric assessment of him yet.

When I think of the KKK I Think of daniel Carver from the Stern show.... Hard to take them serious.

Many dumb ass kids tattoos/wear swastikas. For some reason I do not think they are real Nazis...

I am no Psychiatrists, but it is my personal belief that anyone that can shoot someone, to include kids, for no reason is insane.

His surname and middle name are common in South Africa. It's very possible that his family is from that area, and that he was raised with certain beliefs.

I don't know him - no one here does (to my knowledge). I'm just saying that Nazis aren't the only racists in the world.

Genuine question: if a white guy wearing apartheid era SA flags on his jacket walks into a famous black church and mows down at least 9 black people, and it isn't racist...what counts as racist?

Alternatively put - if a black man wearing a Malcolm X T-shirt walked onto a New Hampshire golf course, and mowed down at least 9 white people, would anyone deny that race was a factor?

I don't question that the guy is insane. But not to take the KKK seriously around here is like walking barefooted through the woods around here during warm weather. You'll be lucky not to get bit by something.

The ones around here are poor angry rednecks. Many are involved in crime and drugs, especially meth. These fuckers would never make it on the Stern show, and they'd likely spit in his face if they did.

Now bring into your quaint little example the bozo who walked into the movie theater and did the exact same thing...

...your "racist" crutch is now gone, yet the true common denominator still exists.

What would that be?

He doesn't sound insane to me at all. Jared Laughner is insane. This guy just sounds like an asshole.

John Mullins, who went to high school with [Dylann] Roof, told The Daily Beast that he remembers him as being “kind of wild.”

“He used drugs heavily a lot,” Mullins said. “It obviously harder than marijuana. He was like a pill popper, from what I understood. Like Xanax, and stuff like that.”

White Knoll High School had a mix of black and white students. Mullins says they occasionally mixed, and the school had “a lot of preps, a little bit of gang members, and a lot of outcasts.” But Roof wasn’t one of the outcasts, Mullins said.

Yet Roof did have a reputation for spouting racist messages.

“I never heard him say anything, but just he had that kind of Southern pride, I guess some would say. Strong conservative beliefs,” he said. “He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don’t really take them seriously like that. You don’t really think of it like that.”

But now, “the things he said were kind of not joking,” Mullins added.
