Ever Wonder About Those Transcontinental Cables?i

So...whats the deal with those transatlantic cables?

I had seen that story earlier today. What I liked most about it was the effort that was put in to make the map look like one from back in the day, with rosy/dusty colors, flourishes and scrolls.

It just added to it.

Those cable routes are transOCEANIC, not transCONTINENTAL. They cross oceans, not continents, notice? As it happens, I have a couple old Zenith Transoceanic shortwave receivers. One needs new tubes. Good thing they're not underwater.

Is there anything on shortwave that can't be heard on iTunes? I used to be avid, but it's not worth it any more.

Dunno, I haven't tried in years. My last WRTH is 2002, so that marks the end of my avidity. Damn -- I have two Sony ICF-2010 commo receivers, still among the best possible, and I only bother with them in the broadcast bands. I just don't have the drive anymore to sit up all night hunting signals, twisting antenna tuners, tracking times and freqs to firm-up station IDs. Now I need merely scan various media players (I don't use iTunes) for music or talk from anywhere. It's too easy.

EXCEPT... We'll probably get another small motorhome next year, something under 22 feet. We like touring in remote locales, away from wireless signals. I'm sure an ICF-2010 will help link us to the world when we're camped out past Area 51.
