Smh.... That was a Murder, not Manslaughter. But he will do less than a year and get a security job, if he does do time. And that's a big if. Maybe he will just get probation.

" A rookie cop who shot and killed an unarmed Brooklyn man in an unlit housing project staircase was indicted for manslaughter Tuesday, the Daily News has learned.

In a blockbuster grand jury decision, Peter Liang will face criminal charges that can send him to prison for up to 15 years for the death of Akai Gurley on Nov. 20, a source said.

The secret panel started hearing the case on Feb 4. A spokeswoman for the Brooklyn District Attorney declined to comment.

A source said Liang, 27, was indicted for a top count second-degree manslaughter, which means he acted recklessly. He was also charged with reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and official misconduct, another source said."

no, i would think that manslaughter fits if i remember correctly. what he did was fatally idiotic and for that he should be punished, but it wasn't murder.

and by punished i mean i hope they send his ass to prison for as long as they can.

Um.... Isn't that what I said?

I thought people might like to know what you were talking about.

I agree. Officers of the peace should be held to a higher standard when it comes to idiot mistakes with a firearm.

That cop murdered that boy in Cali a couple of years ago ( I only know about it because I recently watched the movie lol) and got 11 months. The guy was laying on his stomach and I think he was handcuffed when he was shot in the back. 11 months for shooting a defenseless handcuffed man? This NYC cop will only do a day and a half then.

They should be held to a higher standard for more than that.

sadly, him getting off light is a real possibility. doesn't make it right though.

because, yes, they should be held to a higher standard, but really anyone who did what he did would be deserving of prison for acting so foolishly with a dangerous weapon.

Yeah a lot of other cops should of been in jail too. But it's just the way of the world.

What was the boy's name?

The one in Oakland? Oscar Grant, this was about 5 years ago tho. http://youtu.be/bmJukcFzEX4

The one in NY I don't know.

I remember reading about that case. First, the cops in Oakland are assholes, and I can believe anything negative that might be said about them, and the BART cops are the worst of the lot.

This might have been partly an accident, but the cop still got off easier than he should have. There was no reason even to taze the guy, who wasn't resisting, except maybe passively.

The cop should of been doing 10 years.

In 95% of cases, cops get off with very light punishments (a few years in prison or probation) when they are convicted in cases of fatal officer-involved shootings where the use of deadly force was not properly justified, and the charge is usually manslaughter and not murder.

The following videos demonstrate three of such cases.

Transit cop shoots unarmed, handcuffed, and non-combative teenager in the back of his head.

Police shoot unarmed homeless man for camping on private property.

Police beat schizophrenic homeless man to death.
