I have been going in to work at 6:15am lately. The traffic is already a parking lot on the freeway by 6:30.

Clearly there are already too many people and cars in the country. We continue to allow 3 million newcomers to move to America every single year. How can our roads and infrastructure handle this massive population growth?

Some starry-eyed environmentalists think that we can just build more rail lines and add more bike lanes. The reality is that most people do not live within a reasonable distance of a transit stop, and live too far from work or shopping to ride a bike. Clearly, this is no answer.

We must either stop or significantly reduce the massive annual influx into the country, quickly build more roads and freeways to accommodate the growing numbers of vehicles, or America is DOOMED.

Actually, renard, almost 80% of America is just fine...

...it's your 20+% that sucks.

If all you city rats simply did the honorable thing and offed yourselves...

...America would be great again.

If what you say is true the very last thing we should do is build more roads. That makes congestion worse.

It takes taxes to build and maintain roads.

Shitty roads?

Thank the tea party.

So move to Detroit....

Obama is sending a bill to congress, today, that proposes a one time 14% tax on profits that overseas US corporations have earned. He's said this money will be used to update USA infrastructure, roads. It's to be implemented in 6 years.

OK but the thing is...

Transportation is one of the biggest obstacles that impoverished people face. And our current reliance on internal combustion engine run, pollution spewing individual family vehicles could be killing us. So the current system does present problems in any area; in the city it's killing you, and in the country you've got no way to get to work, school, stores, etc. So we really do need /something/. But I'm not sure what.

Does the federal beauro of public roads trickle down, tho? I mean, the county roads are always noticeably shittier than the state roads. I don't know how they get their money. Genuine question. I fear that I'm so snarky people always think I'm being a smart-ass even when I am asking a real question.

The oversimplified version:
Yes, it trickles down. The states are responsible for all the roads in their state (they own them), the federal government helps finance construction with federal taxes. Local and state taxes are collected for road purposes too.

Of course you'd like to explain exactly HOW the tea party is responsible, right?

Ishmael

They don't want to and campaign against paying for them....they think all the services they feel entitled to should just happen like magic.

I always get confused.

Which Tea Party are we talking about?

The one that is discredited and discarded, the JV, or

;)

The one that controls the whole GOP and pulls all of the strings in Congress?

All of the above of course. :D

There are two solutions to this problem and they are not popular ones .
Give up the idea of the suburbs and build high density housing .
Let more of the office work be done from home ,it makes no sense with modern technology to have a massive workforce in a special building .

Solutions in search of a problem...

When people tire of the drive, they will move, find a new job, or find another mode of transport.
