Traffic congestion will destroy America

I have been going in to work at 6:15am lately. The traffic is already a parking lot on the freeway by 6:30.

Clearly there are already too many people and cars in the country. We continue to allow 3 million newcomers to move to America every single year. How can our roads and infrastructure handle this massive population growth?

Some starry-eyed environmentalists think that we can just build more rail lines and add more bike lanes. The reality is that most people do not live within a reasonable distance of a transit stop, and live too far from work or shopping to ride a bike. Clearly, this is no answer.

We must either stop or significantly reduce the massive annual influx into the country, quickly build more roads and freeways to accommodate the growing numbers of vehicles, or America is DOOMED.

If what you say is true the very last thing we should do is build more roads. That makes congestion worse.

Transportation is one of the biggest obstacles that impoverished people face. And our current reliance on internal combustion engine run, pollution spewing individual family vehicles could be killing us. So the current system does present problems in any area; in the city it's killing you, and in the country you've got no way to get to work, school, stores, etc. So we really do need /something/. But I'm not sure what.

The oversimplified version:
Yes, it trickles down. The states are responsible for all the roads in their state (they own them), the federal government helps finance construction with federal taxes. Local and state taxes are collected for road purposes too.

Give up the idea of the suburbs and build high density housing .
