Hands up who wants to shoot the Duranman

It is weird to hear the same authors voice in a poorly executed American accent.

To my ear the English one was off too, but by contrast- it is much closer to his actual, comfortable vernacular. As if he were adopting the "voice" of a close friend or crazy uncle.

Not worth the price of a bullet or the possible punishment.

Instead, mockery & laughter are far more amusing whilst shunning is far more effective.

Ammo has gotten quite pricey..

So where in your enlightened opinion do I genuinely reside?...

In the UK. But you are playing a character based on someone you know. You do not normally talk in quite this way.

What way? I'm not a typical Brit?...

I wouldn't know typical. There is an entire spectrum of speech patterns for Brits.

There are nuances in your speech patterns and word choices that suggest not "you.' what ever "you' would normally be is all.

I can't give examples, because it is en total. It just twangs wrong. Hard to say why.

Others think you are a regular posing as duranman. I assume this is your primary ID here. Just that you have elected to play "yourself" in a more colorful way than in what passes for real life, is my guess.

Interesting. On an earnest note, Duranman is effectively a take on what is bad in the UK and in my opinion it's people. We are the greatest country in the world (I don't wish to get embroiled in dialogue on that subjective point) but the bigotry/ prejudice 'I' spout is a generic reflection of this very small and complex island.

Alts, arguments, ammo and great tits.

This thread is a microcosm of the GB.

Perhaps the GB is a fractal.

You know when you are in a pub and someone is telling a story? They will say, "And then Shemp goes ___________________________"

People with the talent for actual mimicry will do Shemp's actual voice, but all, in that raconteur mode, will try as best they remember to quote Shemp verbatim to give the flavor that makes the story worth telling.

When they speak for Shemp, it gives you the feel, but it is off because they are not actually Shemp.

Duranman is consistent in voice, just off, somehow. That leads me to believe you are not just parroting random people you have overheard, or the different "voices" would come through. Is there one 'bloke' in particular that you channel when you are forming what you wish to express? A crazy uncle? The guy that you know that is always at the pub? An loud co-worker?

Vanity troll threads are the sincerest form of gay love, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I know where you're coming from but you're off, though in a close kind of way. Not that I'm comparing myself with him, but the dialogue between Daniel Craig and the beauty when they first met on the train in Casino Royale is closer to the truth, but only now you've put that train of thought in my mind. In England it is, whether we admit it or not, a class thing. Are you a shrink?..

I read a lot. I notice characters. In every work of fiction I think the author places himself. Not always as the main protagonist, but somewhere is his true voice.

That makes sense, the Daniel Craig reference. It sounds like you have a facility for writing and you have taken an arch-tpe in your mind and have fleshed him out. Probably can almost "see" him speak in your mind as you lend him a voice.

I think that class or the perception of having stations in life one is assigned or aspires to, or falls from grace into is universal. The caste system, for example is very formalized.

America is alleged not to have one, but of course we do, and we obviously aspire to codify it further. Why else the fascination with vapid celebrities through gossip magazines and now entire shows?

We even have classes of rich. We have evil ones if they make money using their brains, and near deity if you do it using beauty, brawn, or agility.

Our first president is said to have rebuffed the role, but since then we have developed a robust, political ruling class as well. Two sets of fathers and sons have been President, Cousins, (or was it a nephew?) people are seriously talking about a Bush/Clinton match-up as if those two are the best we have out of 340,000,000 people.
