How can I get a respectable avatar as a blind guy?

So here's the thing, folks. I'm a totally blind guy. Like, totally. Like, my eyes are prosthetic. That's how blind I am. As such, I don't personally care all that much for avatars. I can't see them, therefore they're meaningless to me.
However, in my recent attempts to strike up conversations with people, I've been told that having an avatar really helps. Go figure, I guess. So I tried to add one myself, just doing a google image search for something silly and using that, but that picture was apparently too large. Keep in mind, I can do image searches just like anyone else, but I still can't see the images I find.
So, while normally I would let this go, I don't want to lose out on great conversation because I'm dismissed for not having an avatar. I also don't really want an avatar that makes me seem like a mean or awful person. This means I have to trust someone to, maybe, find me a useable, respectable avatar. That is difficult for me, because other people could theoretically pick any picture and tell me it's something else. It's a trust thing, it's a character flaw, I know. Is there anything I can do?

Wow, what an interesting problem. As Rainshine mentioned, enlisting a friend to help sounds like a good idea. And there are plenty of us, me included, that could help resize an image for you. I recently did some holiday avatars for a few people around the board, I don't mind helping you with yours.

To each his own, of course, but I would try to have some fun with selecting an avatar. One image that comes to mind immediately is the cartoon character Mr. Magoo. Of course, if such images don't appeal to you then this direction might not work.

If so, can you "hear" the nuances like when someone puts something in quotes, or indicates a pause with ellipses, or uses bold, underline or italics?

You're quite correct. I use screenreading software which outputs text on the screen as synthesized speech. It does properly intone some things. A properly punctuated question will rise in pitch, for instance. There are actually really high quality synthesizers that even simulate human breath while speaking.

It would be interesting to go to the "how do you sound" thread and compare peoples real voices to the synthesized voice

I occasionally use synthesized voice to read stories out, if I need my hands free... and no, I don't mean that! If I'm cooking or something I use it to read text I've written as a means of proof-reading too. The voices are definitely getting better, but it does have a funny side when the software gets caught out by a word
