How to become a fashion stylist for porn stars?

Hello everyone, it`s been ages since I`ve been on here....Anyway I have a unique question for you all. What is the best way to begin working with adult industry professionals as a fashion stylist? The idea was brought up by a professor who taught a fashion styling course I attended last month. At first, I laughed, rolled my eyes and thought she was crazy. But she talked about reaching out to unlikely people as clientele. Then I got to thinking, maybe she could have a good point. I did some Googling obviously, but couldn`t find anything on how to get started. So I figured I`d ask here, because I know someone here might have some insights. I`ve been styling for about 2 years. I have a portfolio and have worked with 9 clients so far. I have the skills, experience and knowledge but thought I`d expand my career horizons. I happen to think style, fashion, sensuality and sexuality go together great! So I figured I`ll give it a try. Any suggestions on reaching out to adult industry people or even ameteurs and what to say? Will I be taken seriously having only styled everyday people? Your insights would be greatly appreciated :)

Well, I can't just hire a pretty face. I am going to have to see you naked.

Of course not on every set, but a lot of the talent get a little shy when they have to be naked and the rest of staff is not. It is much better for the pathos of a scene if they can feel free and uninhibited.

I find it best if the crew is run on a more egalitarian basis.

I didn't think they wore much beyond the first 30 seconds.

Right. But a fashion stylist is just the person who selects the wardrobe for the talent! They are NOT a model or actor. Maybe you didn`t understand my initial question?

Of course, but as talent is slipping in and out of wardrobe they are usually more comfortable if the set is nude. It is always a closed set, no looky-loos allowed. Also with all the nudity involved, the temperature is always adjusted accordingly so no need to worry about shivering!

The San Fernando Valley is very temperate in climate. Especially since climate change happened.

You are probably picturing a drafty NYC loft. It isn't like that at all! It is very comfortable and liberating.

Lol, good point. They also need stylists for everyday life too. And for photo shoots. A few years ago I saw this site where a woman modeled stylish yet skimpy outfits. I`ve seen others who could use a style update.

That is a popular misconception.

There so many options, and thats where a good fashion stylist comes in.

Pink wrist cuffs or black? Four garter straps or the more secure six?

Stilettos are a given, they don't call them CFM heels for nothing, but platform or not? Peep-toe? Strappy? Traditional pumps?

And then there is body ornamentation jewelry.

For the men you have to decide whether the socks stay on or off; should you oil them up glossy or with a matte finish. Between takes: a loin cloth or a cock-sock?

How do you know? I don`t think that`s true. The crew does not go naked, from what little I know about the porn industry, crew members still behave professionally just like any other production! I also went to college for TV/film production. So I know that certain standards have to be maintained.....

I would luv to do this as a job. Clothes and sex, made for me xxxxxx

How do you feel about working in and around nudity? From your handle, it looks like you likely aren't particularly shy?

You are too right about having certain standards. For the non-talent personnel, obviously they do not need porn-star-perfect bodies, but if they are going to be working in and around nudity and nude themselves they need to be the type of person that takes some pride in their appearance.

THe great thing about some of the outdoor summertime sets is one can get an all-over tan on the job. How many occupations can you say that about?

Lmao but that`s EXACTLY my point! Now you`re talking my language....

Good point! I take good care of myself but I still don`t feel like I need to worry about being naked or barely dressed in order to get a job as a fashion stylist for porn people.

Oh, honey...If you only knew...

Do you work in the porn industry? Or what?

What about working with strippers instead of porn stars?

They wear more clothes and they tend to have shticks. I imagine "break away" designs would be popular.

The porn industry is a fairly small scene, like the music industry, and all the players know each other. Breaking into any scene like that requires persistence, research, luck and the knowledge of when and how to seize social opportunities.

Do you have those 'Sexpo' coventions anywhere near where you are?

In Europe and Asia and Australia they are pretty big and you will find in one spot a whole vast array of entrepreneurial types (which is what you need). Porn is about heroism, it's not about money... They SAY.

When you stick your business card in front of enough of the type of real ground-level marketeering sex industry entrepreneur, you may get to know some of them - mostly the make-up people (usually women) are really good sorts of people and can get you a chance or two.

I don't generally like any modern era professors and academics, but I think yours is right. It's never gonna be easy though.

How good are you at selling?

Don't know that much about styling or the industry, but - one way to work it would be to get into contact (either in person if you're in their area, or via their social media) with an influential performer (someone young/new with a following) who you think you would do a good job styling. Do a pro bono styling session with them, get lots of good pics, make sure they're super happy. Then hype that up. You may have to do a few jobs for free or your expenses, but if you can get good word of mouth out of it it'll be worth it.

You should have just said: "Welcome to small business and free enterprise."

:D
