holy crap!

Two window washers have been rescued from a platform dangling near the 69th floor of One World Trade Center after the New York fire department sawed through the glass and hauled them to safety.

Oh good. I'm glad they're safe.

Government job obviously.

No one at any point in the planning process someone had the foresight and said, "Say, you know in this 1,776 foot tall building, we should have a fucking window open somewhere in the middle in case we needed to access the outside for any reason."

I'm glad they're safe.

Opening style window on some level around the 70th floor should be coming in the next 6-12 months I would suspect after this fuck up.

Opening windows on a skyscraper?

You new to this world?

This window washing outfit has a long history of accidents. Anyone working for them better examine your static lines and everything else with an eye towards the life you save might be your own.

No, it's not a government job. It is done by a very few companies, generally staffed by some damned good engineers and some incredible nut case workers.

Yes, of course because a broken cable will always stop right next to the opening window.

Of all the jobs out there that one could automate, you would think "1/3 of a mile high skyscraper window washer" would be on the list.

"Thank you for your service"

He doesn't condone that phrase unless you issue it with the requisite caveats.

The problem is that modern skyscrapers aren't rectangles. They are odd shapes in all directions. A good high-tech drone might manage if cabled to the building - probably will happen in a year or three. (then you can bitch about lost jobs to machines)

The government job was referring to the plan and build - not the clean. Total respect for anyone who dares to go up there and do what they have to do.

But it's a hell of a lot easier to save someone if you have 60-70 floors to go through and not potentially 104.
