I almost always PM in response to, or development of, a discussion of a public thread. Quite often it's when I worry that I am starting what is effectively a two-way conversation within that thread and don't wish to derail it. Only once that I can think of have I PM'd somebody without first 'talking' to them in public.

Depends on how we've interacted on the boards. Usually, if there's something that we've shared a joke over there, I'll lead with something referencing that.

Otherwise, I'll pick something that person has said or posted on their profile that we have in common, and go with that.
