Does the minimum wage kill jobs?

AJ and Miles have both referred to the unwashed this morning. Are you guys especially clean, or this that code for 'you're a little better than everyone else?'

Well, they do usually get their daily talking points from the same source....

All this talk about minimum wage jobs is holding us back and lowering our standard of living. Every one understands the concept of minimum wage. No one would eve THINK about supporting a family on minimum wage. These have always been and will always be entry level, high turnover jobs. You get in, make a few bucks, and move on to something better. No one should aspire to a minimum wage jobs. We are lowering ourselves by fixating on the minimum wage. We should focus on growing the PRIVATE SECTOR and increasing the demand for highly skilled/highly paid workers. We certainly have to partner with education to prepare students to succeed financially in the real world. We're really wasting our time focussing on the minimum wage. It should be a non issue.

Elections are won by focusing on little things.

Minimum wage isn't about bottom-feeder quality of life, minimum wage is the floor for all other wages. Few people make minimum wage, the number is small, but the wage rate is the standard for 200 million others in the workforce. I mean, if a receptionist makes double minimum wage, if minimum wage goes to 15 or 20 dollars an hour the receptionist demands twice that. If the union worker makes 30 an hour or twice what the receptionist gets, he wants double, too. The company then hires lepers to make their stuff and staff their call centers.

Some of us care about the money that we earn. For us, it is a big deal.

That's simply not true. It was designed to be enough for you to support a family on. We've gradually gotten away from it but that was the design.

Creating highly skilled jobs is simply unrealistic. It's a nice dream but it rates up there with hoping that the moon will be the 51st state in the realm of things that are realistically going to happen. The reality is that as a general rule the more highly skilled a job is the fewer people are necessary to do it. It's been true since the industrial revolution began and the information age has simply accellerated it.

Trouble is Ramone, there are many here and in society that want more for doing less. They want something for nothing. The real issue ought to be why a free people would readily submit to the crap world notion that non productive bureaucrats know better than the market the worth of it's labor.

Everybody wants more for doing less, if they don't you should slap them for being retarded. The market however is broken and will be broken for a long, long time after any of us are dead. At least if the goal is to keep the population at roughly what it is and preventing huge uphevals.

And every time it's raised union wage progressions are re-negotiated from the new bottom figure. They love the Minimum Wage though none in a union works for it. The other favorable benefit to unions is that a higher minimum wage further restricts incoming labor at the bottom of the scale thus protecting those higher paying jobs at the top.

This falls under the DUH categoty at the start and while it may prevent some people from entering at the bottom the benefits to society as a whole by far out weigh it.

you are such a carp ... please jump into a lake
