Kiju Jung from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign made this discovery after analysing archival data about the 94 hurricanes that hit the US between 1950 and 2012. As they write, “changing a severe hurricane’s name from Charley to Eloise could nearly triple its death toll”.

Why?

The names certainly don’t reflect a storm’s severity, and they alternate genders from one to the next.

Jung team thinks that the effect he found is due to unfortunate stereotypes that link men with strength and aggression, and women with warmth and passivity. Thanks to these biases, people might take greater precautions to protect themselves from Hurricane Victor, while reacting more apathetically to Hurricane Victoria. “These kinds of implicit biases routinely affect the way actual men and women are judged in society,” says Sharon Shavitt, who helped to design the study. “It appears that these gender biases can have deadly consequences.”

What's in a name?

Maybe we should name hurricanes after animals. Start with Aardvark and go on to Zebra, if needed. Of course, even then we could find bias between the cute and cuddly animals, and the more ferocious beasts. Hurricane Leopard would certainly spur more preparation than Hurricane Hamster.

Hurricanes are a real thing around here. I live far enough from the coast that the really severe winds and the storm surge are not a danger. We do face the possibility of wind damage, which can mean power failures of hours or weeks. The longest time I went without power was 8 days. Others in this city waited 28 days. If you want to spend an interesting month, take a 21st century infrastructure and pretend you're living in the 19th century.

The kinds of hurricane preparation a person makes depends more on what the person can do, not whether the storm has a male or female name. Baton Rouge is the crossroads of the hurricane evacuation routes. If there is a serious hurricane predicted to land anywhere between Houston and Pensacola, most people will pass through Baton Rouge. Of course, this means they have a car, or a truck big enough to pull their 26ft boat. You don't see a lot of poor people this far from the danger zone.
