This is crazy. I can't believe I'm asking it.

Have you ever read an author's work, and something in it resonated so deeply with you that you thought you might be developing feelings for the author as a person?

I can't believe I have an author's crush! I am in my late thirties, and this has never happened to me!

Well, maybe a little bit once with Tom Robbins.

Help!

I think it's a little like falling in love with your shrink.

Being understood is a powerful aphrodisiac, and no one understands you like the writing on the page. A story is a blanket given to millions to warm them on cold nights, but, being the self-centered creatures we are, we wrap it tight around ourselves until it fits like a glove. We pick characters for ourselves, for our friends. We come to believe that the author knows us, and that we, in turn, know them.

It's a pitfall of the mental and emotional connection created by reading. To read a good book is to open your bed to a stranger, who then crawls under the covers and tells you things about yourself you never knew. Few things are more intimate than letting someone fuck with your imagination.

So tell us who it is! (I feel like a teenager at a slumber party!)

(I'm not a teenager, BTW.)

I'll never tell!

Ahh, that's lovely, and exactly what it feels like.

Not that Lit authors aren't real life or rich or famous. You know what I mean.

I'm with you on Neil Gaiman. His "Make Good Art" speech definitely gets me hot and bothered.

It's a Lit author! I can't even work up the courage to leave them a comment because I'm afraid I'll go all gushy!

I mean, look at me! I can't even talk about it without abusing exclamation points!

It's JBJ. Admit it. :p

Honestly who doesn't have a crush on JBJ ;)

I think crushes are great, they give you that goofy feeling where you walking around smiling and people wonder what it is your thinking about. I hope you work up the courage to speak to yours :)

Most of my favorite authors are male:eek:

But before she became "Billy martin"

I had a little fan crush on Poppy Z Brite. A sick and twisted mind and although not what I would call hot, did have a certain look about her when she was a her.

I'll admit it.

My Lit crush is Penn Lady.

Strutting around here with that wildcat Av and talking about Hockey and Neil Gaiman. Pretending to be a good little stay at home mom.

I know what's behind that act.

If she only knew how many of my stories she inspired. Sighs.

Check out this story and tell me hat you think along the lines of crushes.

Out of the Night

Not saying it's a true story, but the again....

Mmm, I think the narrator's fan is a very lucky woman. :D

I have almost felt the same!

I know what you're talking about. I have felt it very, very nearly to the same degree. There's an author who posts here and there on the internet under the simple pen name "dreiser." She has a wonderful way of animating the characters and letting their relationships grow so slowly, gently, and delicately....There were a few times when I read a particularly good story by "dreiser" and sat back in awe. I am glad such wordsmiths exist! I've written this author several gushy fan letters over the years.

As for mainstream authors, I had one crush as well: Katherine V. Forrest. Her novels and short stories still speak to me after all these years.

Wish I could help, but I'm afraid I can't. So I advise that while you feel this way...enjoy it! Admiration and artistic communication are wonderful things!

I've never experienced any sort of "crush" for a particular writer, mainly because most of the authors I read are men and I don't develop romantic feelings for men. Sexual, yes, but not romantic.

Still, if I had the chance (and this brings to mind the infamous "who would you have over for dinner" question), I'd love for the chance to have candid talks with Elmore Leonard, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. I probably wouldn't talk much, just listen in rapt awe.

(And I'm with you; Tim Robbins is one heck of an actor.)

TOM Robbins, the novelist. ;)

Oops moment!

Wow, how did I screw that up? Sure, I'm blonde, but still...!
