I noticed I've cooked my way around the world this week.

Monday: blinis with vendace roe, smoked salmon and the other fixings (Russia)
Tuesday: chickpea curry (India)
Wednesday: Moroccan lamb stew (Morocco)
Thursday: frijoles charros (Mexico)
Friday: mussel bisque (France)

Too bad the Concorde isn't still in operation (and my wallet fat enough to not mind the cost). I'd even bring the wine to go with the bisque.

Prepping to make some Skyline-style chili. I have new peppers that I had grilled and brased, so I am amp'ed to see how the impact the flava'. I am normally not even that much a chili fan, but I will readily admit since experimenting with a few different recipes, its starting to become my go-to dish for my post-winter workout runs and skate/ski sessions. America's Test Kitchen had a great segment on their experiments with and I highly recommend folks try it out if they're into that sort of thing.

Tsukune yakitori (skewered chicken meatballs with tare sauce)
Fried rice (using up the leftovers)
Dark green salad
Roasted peppers

Tomorrow I'm going to make sanma takikomi gohan ^_^ Mister's going to love it!

Broccoli soup.
Debating with myself whether I should make pancakes for afterwards.

Broccoli soup and pancakes on Fridays is the new pea soup and pancakes on Thursdays. *nods*

Menchi katsu burgers

Ground beef, broccoli, carrot, onion and panko mixed together and formed into burger patties. Patties are breaded and deep fried.

The sandwich consists of the menchi katsu, tonkatsu sauce, mayo, cheese, and shredded cabbage. These came out awesome :D

How do you keep the patties from drying out?

I have never thought of pairing soup with pancakes. It's quite natural to slice up some hearty bread with a good soup but never has it occurred to me to let pancakes be the starch in this equation.

That said, I wonder how similar/different are your and my pancakes?

Pea soup and pancakes are a thing here, served usually on Thursdays. The pancakes are a dessert, though, not a side dish to the soup. :)

Our pancakes are like crepes, not thick like yours over there. And then there's the oven variety, too. It's pancake batter baked in the oven. That one's thick, but no leavening agent is used, so it isn't fluffy.

Yes, peasoup and pancakes are a sure sign it's thursday here.
And it's not that unusal here to pair other often lighter soups with oldfashioned desserts that are way too much food to eat after a heavier main course unless you're a lumberjack or something like that.

There must be a fascinating cultural story behind this tradition.

Well, these are thick and deep fried so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

If I make a regular burger I usually cook on the stove and cover only flipping once. Also, the right ratio of fat in the meat can make a difference. :) I don't really know if this will help, I don't usually make burgers. The menchi katsu just happened to have healthy veggies in it that I like (^_^)

Friday used to be a day of lent back in the Catholic days, and that's why people tanked up on hearty peasoup on Thursdays. The tradition was pretty pan-European at some point, but now the peasoup on Thursdays is only alive and kicking in the north. The lent not so much, though. Or the Catholicism.

The pancake is a later addition, from the 19th century. It was first served with peasoup on Shrove Tuesday, which is another day when peasoup is traditionally eaten. Then as the pancake ingredients became cheaper, pancake started to be paired up with peasoup on Thursdays, too.

I once put something in my meat, cant remember what, and it came out dry. Never again will I strayed from my meat snob ways. Salt and spices, nothing else.

I gather that the tradition of pea soup and pancakes has also leapt the bounds of the lenten season, too. Good deal, as it's a dreadful thing to do to people just to make them feel more virtuous and thus drop more money in the cash basket each Sunday.

I made crock pot pork tenderloin last night and it was amazing, so leftovers will be for tonight. I didn't follow one recipe, just kind of winged it - pork loin, water to cover it, a few packets of soy sauce, a cup and a half of coconut sugar, half a jar of dijon mustard, a minced bulb of garlic, a packet of vegetable soup mix. Mix it up, four hours on high. Take the meat out, scoop the liquid in the crockpot out and put it in a saucepot. Add a bit more coconut sugar and more dijon, reduce it by 1/3, and ladle over meat once it's plated for serving. Sides were stuffing and broccoli.

My mouth is watering writing this. I should've taken pics, it was SO good.

Yesterday we made pizza.
Today we are making burgers, trying a new recipe for the buns.
Tomorrow we planned to make carnita tacos. We'll see.
Somehow fast food isn't fast at all when you make it yourself.

Ooooohhhh!! I did NOT know about this thread, will be posting in here as soon as I cook something good! :) Until then, here's a recent find I enjoyed. Too... intensely unique to sit and drink all at once, but good to start out or top off a night, and definitely should not be missed if you like chocolate and red wine!!
